Les Writing blog, with tips, advice, and my own writing... And Nanowrimo obsession.

My Nano Projects

October 17th 2008 03:47
I did say I would post my ideas for Nanowrimo, so here are all five books with their basic premises:

Book one and two follows 4 people; Emilia, the Elf turned vampire, Prince Nevillan, who is trying his hardest to keep peace between the races even as his father tries to destroy it, Torin, the son of a count who is on Nevillan's side, and Milan, Torin's sister and the daughter. In the first book, they attempt to warn the Elves of an assassination attempt.

Nevillan is turned into a werewolf, and the second book is all about the repercussions of this, as the four are hunted because of the fear of hybrids.

Book three is about the Vampire Queen, the original vampire in that world, and her first Vampire son, when they live with the historian Kirinersh and the three share their histories with each other.

Book four is Dragons Bane, about the extinction of the dragons and the other Draconic races. (It's the least planned so far.)

Book five is as of yet untitled, and it is about a girl who was abused from the time she was seven until she was fourteen, and at fourteen raped. She goes absolutely bonkers, gets put in a corrupt asylum, gets worse, and finally escapes to live on the street, finding her escape from the horrors of this world in drugs that her boyfriend feeds her.

Any thoughts? Anyone doing Nanowrimo? What are your ideas?

Not much longer...

October 16th 2008 17:38
There are only fifteen days left until Nanowrimo, so if you're going to join us crazies and attempt to write a novel in a month, it's time to start doing some heavy thinking.

Personally, I have mixed feelings about this little piece of news. Why are they mixed? Mostly because the idea of having only fifteen days to plan 4 novels, especially when my weekends are booked solid with no time for NanoWriMoing, makes me feel like someone just dropped a ton of bricks on me.

Fifteen days. Which is really more like ten or so, because a few of those days are going to be booked solid. And I have plenty of schoolwork to do. As in about six pages worth to do today. How fun.

But at the same time... it's almost November, which means it's almost time for me to have a legitimate excuse to not do my work, to avoid socializing with people I don't really want to see, and to actually put a heavy focus on my writing.

So little time, so much to do. I suppose all that means is that sleeping is officially not important anymore.

...I'll start sleeping again in December...

...I promise...

Join me in my insanity at nanowrimo.org and let the writing begin (in a couple weeks.)

Pre-Nano Work: Outline

October 15th 2008 02:04
I haven't actually gotten this far because I'm way behind. (That said, I have pages upon pages of world notes and I have most of my character sheets done.)

But here is an outlining exercise...

Take a piece of blank paper and draw a square near the edge of the paper; this is your border. Write at the top 'Outline' and the title of your story/novel.

Now put all the major events as dot-jot notes basically, giving brief ideas of everything that absolutely must happen.

Make a separate list of things you think would be cool, but which aren't necessary.

Based off of your events that you need and the ones you want, figure out how you're going to have to pace it in storytime in order to get as much as possible in the novel.

You can go further with this, but personally I prefer very basic outlines. As long as I know what order the events need to go in I'm fine. It makes it more fun to write, discovering things as I go.

Thanksgiving

October 13th 2008 18:50
It's Thanksgiving here in Canada. I have dinner with the side of my family that I don't like too much, so I don't have time to write anything at the moment. I might be able to write something later, but we'll see if my mom lets me on the computer at home.

To all other Canadians-Happy Thanksgiving

Pre-Nano Work: Characters

October 10th 2008 22:20
This is a writing exercise to learn more about your character and keep an on-file idea of who they are, which is basically like a profile.

Pre-Nano Work: Brainstorm

October 10th 2008 00:41
I'm back to talking about Nanowrimo today. It's only a couple more weeks away, after all. For those of you who don't have an idea yet, who are so far flying by the seat of your pants and would like a bit of a plan, I hope this is the right place. I'm going to be doing a lot of my pre-Nano work over the next three weeks and I've decided to share some of it.

I want you to answer the following questions

When Everything Is Just Too Much

October 4th 2008 23:28
So let me tell you something. School is stressing me out; I'm trying to force myself to go but it isn't working very well. Things at home aren't pleasant either. I'm stressed; so stressed that I've been sick on and off for two weeks now. Nanowrimo is on the horizon.

It's times like these when anybody-writer or otherwise-starts to wonder about all their obligations and if they're worth it. It's times like these when normally I would abandon the blog for weeks at a time; I'm trying not to. It's sort of working. It's times like these when we just want to throw in the towel

It's October.

October 4th 2008 00:57
Which means next month is November. And we all know what that means. It's time for me to start advocating for Nanowrimo again.

National Novel Writing Month is a writing challenge to write 50, 000 words in one month. Some people write more, but even those who don't make it are celebrated. The community is wonderful; the motivation is excellent. Some of my closest friends are NanoWrimo participants

Website Review: Holly Lisle

September 15th 2008 00:48
I'm sick, my internet access is severely restrained because I stayed out REALLY late watching the Batman movie (which I loved), and I'm just feeling generically exhausted from school and life at the moment.

However, I am posting something. I just got the last lesson in Holly Lisle's newsletter course on creating your own royalties. Although it isn't for me at quite this point, I believe that someday I will be prepared to take better advantage of the course, which is saved in my Gmail. (I'm just going to say this: I love Gmail, there is so much space, you can keep most of your emails. I have dozens that are kept because there is just that much space

Apparently

September 8th 2008 04:43
Apparently I've burnt myself out and need to fix my sleep schedule yet again; this isn't going to be an easy thing to maintain. (Social lives get in the way three times a month) But I'm determined to maintain it to the best of my ability.

Sadly while I try to fix my sleep schedule I won't be coherent for the next couple of days, at least not enough to write a blog post. I'm going to bed soonish, and slowly resetting my schedule over the next week. If I hadn't have had something both days this weekend I would've been fine, but as it is, I need to fix my schedule. So... I won't be around for a couple days. I also have more editor work to do

Busy

September 4th 2008 04:07
My wrist is acting up again and I have a lot of work to do on Moonshadow's Guardian, so I won't be back until that's done, most likely.

Living, Breathing Stories

September 1st 2008 09:39
I am what I call an 'organic writer'. I can't remember where I first heard the term, although perhaps Stephen King can be blamed (don't ask why his name popped into my head.) I will usually give myself an idea where the story is headed and some idea of the characters, but I let the story grow and change.

I've been working on Jihad for four years now, for example. It's one of my most treasured stories and I know its biggest plot points like the back of my hand. I know the motivations of every God on both sides. I have a firm idea of Kaitlyn's internal function-she adapts to physical change more easily than mental and cultural change. I know Keith pretty well, too
