Write What You Love...

July 18th 2008 05:35
Some people say 'write what you know'. But if I recall correctly, Stephen King and I have the same belief-that it is best to write what you love.

Because we can all write about what we learned in school, but most of us wouldn't want to. We know it-but we do not love it. And if we are forced to write something we do not love, it is by far a lesser product than what it would be if we loved it.

I cannot stress enough how much writing is about love. It is about passion. It is about what makes you you. That love and that passion is what inspires the greatest works of fiction. It is a well known fact that Tolkien loved worldbuilding. He loved his world, and because of this he produced the amazing work that is Lord Of The Rings. He's a well known and well loved writer. And it is because he loved his work.

Stephen King used to love old horror movies (they weren't old then, but they are now) and he still loves horror. It is because of this love of horror, which he held for most of his life, that he became a good writer. In fact a great writer, with many amazing horror stories, and some of the most practical writing advice out there.

Writing is not, is never, about fame and fortune. It's about love, it's about passion, it's about devotion to your story and your characters.

And trust me, that devotion can drain you as much as any devotion to a real person. I have written for hours. Spent hours of my time on these characters, these people, their story, which I come to know and love. I have wept when they died; I have felt fury when they have. I have hurt them and been hurt by them.

I very much love my writing, and my characters. I loved fantasy. Always. I grew up with Harry Potter; with Lord Of The Rings; with Narnia. I grew up with so much fantasy, and I will forever love it. It is my genre. It is precious to me, I read it, I write it. I watch it in movies.

I adore Anne Rice, I adore vampires. I write what I love. Fantasy is my passion, and this is why I write it. I enjoy writing it. And if one does not enjoy what one writes, who will? Will there truly be any passion in it for the reader, either? I love writing. I love fantasy.

And this is why I write what I do. Because I write what I love. And I firmly believe that only by writing what we love may we ever attain success.

Yeah, I totally agree with your opinion here, Dianna.

It's a pleasure to write what you love than write what you know here, as you will insert more passion in it when you're write with what you're love the most

Wilson,

Thank you.

And what is writing without passion? It is nothing but words, endless words...
