What Next: Profiles and Biographies
June 2nd 2010 12:46
What can you do with your Dear Diary project? Well, before looking at what can be done with the Dear Diary project itself, let's take a look at what can be done with all the information you got from your project.
Those of you who have been reading Fictional Worlds for a while may be familiar with my Expanded Character Profiles. In fact, you may have even filled a good chunk of one out for your Dear Diary character. You may have been missing large portions of this profile before. Now is your chance to fill out the entire profile.
What else can you do? With the things you've learned about your character, you can now write a biography. How would a historian write out the facts that you wrote about in your Dear Diary project? How much of what was revealed in your project would be known to a historian? All interesting things to consider.
If you're still in the writing mood, try writing a five hundred to one thousand word biography for your character from the point of view of either a journalist or a historian. As always, I'd love to read what you write.
If you're not in the writing mood, then fill out the expanded character profile and stick around for the other things you can do with your Dear Diary project.

I read your post from work and got all exicted about an idea for this. I did an entry for Wikipedia entry for Elgin. I could not WAIT to get home and write this. Of course, it took me way longer than expected and needed far more research (I like to get facts at least quasi straight at the outset).
I have not done a historical "distillation" of his diary yet. I need to mull this over some more and figure out who would do the review.
This was great fun! : )

I'm really impressed with your Wiki on Elgin. While we still get a feel for his character from the Wiki, you've managed to distance yourself from his voice enough to write the perfect biography.
I'm also thrilled that you loved the workshop and that you're enjoying the post-workshop exercises. I didn't get as much of a response on the Wriye board as I wanted to for this workshop but the amazing work you've shared with me has completely made up for the lack of numbers.
There's more post-workshop stuff coming. It just keeps getting bigger. Every time I finish one post, I think of something else you can do with the project.
I'd like to point you in the direction of the website I was building while you were screnzying, Dianna L. Gunn's Web Corner. In particular I'd like you to take a look at the contact me page. Send me an email and I just might have a writing project proposition for you.
