Excerpt: Snapshots

November 23rd 2009 12:15
This is kind of a long scene for an excerpt, but I can't just give you guys part of the scene, because that would not be very cool of me.

Dreaming of Eternia

I was in a black place. The world around me was black. There was no colour, no light, except for one light shining on one woman sitting in a chair. The woman wore a bloodstained light blue wedding dress and a flower crown on her head. Her eyes were blue, the colour of the mists of magic on my world, similar to those of Lari's. There was the same deep sadness in them. Her hair was long and black and wavy, and it was by this hair that I knew she was not Lari.

“Phoenix... that is your name...”

“I have forsaken that name, now I am Alanna-”

“Do you know who I am, Phoenix?” she asked, her voice melodic like that of an old and wise Elvish priestess.

“No... no I don't,” I said, and a coldness almost like the cold of the aura of Those Who Are came over me, chilling me to the bone.

“My name is Eternia. And since you do not know my name, you must not know my crime.”

Lari's predecessor, I realized. This is the woman they talked about. But they never told me what she did...

“I killed ten thousand people, Phoenix. I was a princess. And at my wedding, I killed ten thousand people. I killed half the population of the city that I lived in at the time with dark magic. Ten thousand people. A quarter of the population of my kingdom. The entire royal family. Most of the nobles; most of the rich people of my kingdom... all gone...”

I stared at her, body numb. She seemed to be glowing, a glow emanating from her that came now almost to me. Her cold, blue eyes looked into the blackness that surrounded us, and there an image appeared. An image of a wedding, this woman's wedding, with thousands of people gathered in a giant yard that lay in front of a temple. This woman next to a man dressed in fine clothes, and on either side a father.

“This was where I killed them; I killed them at my wedding. The once holy yard of the temple, in which royal weddings had been performed for centuries-all manner of royal ceremonies were once performed here-became a tomb for ten thousand people. All of them dead by my magic.”

There were tears in her eyes as she looked at the picture, and then it began to move. There was a flash of lightning, and everything for a moment went white, and then she was standing in the center of the yard surrounded by thousands of bodies. Blood and death all around... I shivered.

“So the Gods came-including your Loki, the one you love so much-and they put me here. They locked me up in this place until the day that I collect ten thousand souls of those who have committed crimes equal to or greater than mine.”

“And the City of the Endeared, my city, capitol city of my kingdom for centuries... it fell into ruin. All of those who had not been at the wedding, those in the city who chose to stay away, all those who survived... they fled the city. And Riminira became the capitol, claimed by a noble family who knew that all the royal family-except for one, except for my brother Kalan-had died in that attack. The noble family became the new royal family, and eventually their blood mixed with that of Lari's ancestors.”

She rose and came over to me. I backed away but found that after a few steps my back hit a wall. A hand reached out and touched my chin, forcing me to look her in the eyes. A cold hand, colder than ice. Full of sorrow.

“Eventually the city rose again. Eventually people moved back, though never again would it be the capitol. Eventually my kingdom forgot me, all but the royal family... and then history was doomed to repeat itself... and eventually Lari was born. Then she allowed the war that destroyed my kingdom, our kingdom.”

“Do you know what you have in common with Lari and I?”

Her eyes pierced into my soul and I tried to turn away, tried to run, but her grip on me was too tight. The other hand extended and caught my wrist. The sheer cold of her touch sent me to my knees before her, kneeling as I had never knelt before anyone. The cruelty in her, the hard cruelty in her, frightened me. No longer was I the Phoenix. No longer was I a Goddess who could burn away her touch...

“And that is what you have in common with Lari and I,” her voice said coldly, filled with hate, “you destroyed your kingdom. I destroyed much of my kingdom without meaning to. All I wanted to do was prove someone wrong. So I killed them all. And the kingdom buried that event deep in its past, buried it by changing its name and forgetting my family.”

“Lari thought she could overcome the Magi Plains. Lari had dreams of a future where all magic users were united in the kingdom of Shalinor. So she did not move to stop the war that she knew was coming. And when it had almost conquered her, when Riminira and a few fishing villages were all that was left of Shalinor, she used the words of power that I had been taught never to use and she killed everyone in Riminira. She killed enemy soldiers and she killed her own people. She killed her servants and her friends. But she and her city have remained perfectly preserved for centuries.”

“Do you see the pattern?”

I shook my head. Tears were now rolling down my cheeks, tears that turned into ice as they got close to her fingers. The icy cold bit into my skin and I could feel frost sneaking up my cheeks. My arm was frozen to the point where I could barely move it.

“No,” I said, forcing it out, barely more than a whisper-but enough, I hoped.

She laughed, a cold, cruel laugh born of years of living alone. I could feel my eyes go wide as she tightened her grip on my wrist. I yelped as all feeling in my hand was lost and my blood felt like it had turned to ice. The stream of tears that turned to ice halfway down my cheek grew larger and I tried to back away. Why could I do nothing now? Because you chose not to be a Goddess anymore, that's why. Suddenly I hated myself, hated my decision...

“When you fell, Phoenix, what happened to your people? Those in Fidolius?”

“They... they were taken and... and they were enslaved and they were beaten,” I managed to say, my voice broken from the cold and the pain.

“Do you see the pattern now? Do you see what you have done-what I once did, what Lari once did, what now you have done?”

“I... I... I did not kill anyone on purpose! Please, please let me go-”

“You destroyed your people, perhaps not to the extent Lari did. Perhaps you have something left, perhaps there are still those who worship you but in time they will fade, as those who were loyal to my family faded. And eventually you will be forgotten. People will pass the ruins of your temples and they will wonder who was once worshiped there. They will wonder. What do you say to that?”

One hand moved from my chin to my chest, and I felt the cold seeping into my bones, seeping into my organs. I felt myself beginning to fade, beginning to die...

“Well? Do you acknowledge what you have done?”

Eternia! A familiar mindvoice yelled, let her go or you will suffer a million years in the flames of Home, you will suffer at the hands of the demons, and I swear to you-

There you have it. The formatting isn't perfect to what it is in the actual file, but I'm lazy. Sue me.... you won't get anything out of it. And that's a promise.

Overnight Writing Session

November 22nd 2009 23:41
So I'm in a bit of a... state... at the moment. But that's not what I'm here to talk about, those are my own personal problems. Let's just say life sucks, and once again, without fail, the end of November is sucking.

All right.

So in Toronto, we have write-ins... and we have an overnight write-in. Every year. Similar to the Night Of Writing Dangerously Write-A-Thon in San Fran that the official Nanowrimo team has started, it's an all night writing session where people hang out and write and it's generally a big bundle of happy people.

I went to my first overnight writing session last night.

It was great. I got to see all the Nanoers that I've come to know and love, spend time with them, meet a few new people, and I got a lot done-I wrote 15, 000 or thereabouts words at the overnighter and I am now sitting at 210K and change.

I can't tell you how glad I am that I made it, and I can't begin to describe how much fun I had there. It was just great times. Most of the people started to have major crashes (caffeine or not) between three thirty and four thirty in the morning, but, being the night person that I am, I was going all night quite happily.

You probably don't have an overnight writing session in your area-but maybe you and some fellow Nanoers can do an online overnight writing session next weekend. It's a great idea and it will spur you on like nothing else... I'm really glad that a friend of mine brought his old laptop for me to use, I'm incredibly happy that I was there, and I'm already excited for next year's-and I will find a way to get there!

Wherever you are, don't worry. I'm nowhere near where I wanted to be right now. This year Nano has been really hard for a lot of people-and I don't necessarily mean it's been hard to hit 50, 000, but a lot of people are struggling to reach their individual word count goals-some people who have never struggled before. But keep going, hang in there, and know that you can accomplish something great this month, even if you feel like all you've been doing is writing crap.

Good luck with your word counts and happy writing.

Thanks for reading,
~Dianna

Week Four...

November 21st 2009 18:16
This is the second last weekend of November, and we're all scrambling to hit our desired word counts now. Hopefully in the next two days you'll be able to put aside some extra time to write, time to write three or four or five thousand words so that you can hit your goal if need be, or just to give yourself some padding in case this last week turns out rough.

Week four is always the hardest week for me. Everything is slowly but surely grinding to a halt. I'm already mourning the fact that once it's over, there are a lot of people I won't see again until next year, both locally and on the forums I love so much. I know that the forums are slowly but surely going to fade into inactivity-but I also know that there will always be people who will wander back in throughout the year and that in these people the spirit of Nanowrimo lives on.

I'm hoping, just like Chris Baty is, that this Tuesday will be a beautiful Tuesday. We're coming to the ends of our novels. Throughout this month we have changed. We've learned that we can do more than we ever thought possible. We've learned that even when we're churning out words in tens of thousands every week, we can still write some good stuff-and trust me, when you look back on your novel, you'll find some great moments. Nanowrimo has changed my life again and again, and I hope it's changed yours too.

On Tuesday the Office Of Letters And Light staff is doing a twenty four hour fundraising drive with the goal to raise $100, 000 in one twenty-four hour period. Chris Baty's idea is that if the mission is successful, they're going to write and perform a song, tentatively entitled 'that beautiful Tuesday'.

If you have the money, and this blog has helped you with your nanowrimo endeavours-whether it be the course that I did in October or the words of encouragement you have found here in November-I'm asking that you please choose to donate in my name, to sponsor me, for this fundraising drive. Click here to sponsor me. This month I've only raised $10-but $10 is something, right? There is no pressure to donate-only a please.

If you're right on track with your novel and your word count, you're coming to the end. It's getting to the point where soon you're going to be tying things up, saying goodbyes to your characters who I'm sure you have come to know and love over the last few months, and reaching your word count goal. If you aren't-don't worry. Even if you don't get 50, 000 words or even 25, 000 words you've done more this month than you would have if you didn't participate in Nanowrimo.

This is a sad time, a time when you are getting ready to say goodbyes to other Nanoers, to your characters, and to your novel for a time.

But don't let that get you down. You're already a winner in my eyes, and I'm sure that the people in the Office Of Letters and Light feel much the same way. You've accomplished something this month, and something is better than nothing.

So what's next? Looking ahead to December, I foresee a Thank God It's Over party in your region-these are always great fun-and don't forget that Createspace is once again offering you a FREE proof copy of your Nanovel. I got a free proof copy of Jihad last year and it was pretty great. Not, of course, the most professional looking book out there, but it's a physical copy you can hold in your hands.

For those of you who aren't anywhere near finishing your novel, and who don't think you're going to finish your novel in the next few days, there's also Nanofimo, a challenge to write 30, 000 words and/or finish your novel in the month of December. And of course next year there will be a host of writing challenges such as Nanowriye and various wrimos throughout the year.

Where are you in your Nanowrimo endeavours? What are your plans for December? As always, I'd love to hear from you.

Fallen? And Notes On Snapshots

November 20th 2009 14:27
So I'm at 185K, not moving as quickly as I would like but I'm confident that I can still hit 350K, and I'm realizing that I might need to change some things.

Jihad has grown from one book into seven into what is probably ten, with the addition of Shanni-a book about a half-Goddess and her life-and Fallen. Fallen is something that I'm not a hundred percent sure that I'll write right now, but having written some scenes, it looks quite probable

Word Count And Stuff

November 19th 2009 13:13
So I'm at 180K, rolling along nicely, back in the game. I'm 100% sure at this point that I'll be able to hit 350K. It's just going to take a helluva lot of work. And a lot less of me getting sidetracked. There are no more days off for the month of November.

I feel six different kinds of recovered from my weekend

Back Into The Flow Of Things

November 18th 2009 20:48
So I'm back into the flow of things, my mind is working after a brief OD on sleep, and I'm back to writing.

Now that Phoenix Falling is finished I'm working on something Entirely Different. It was supposed to be a book called Astarael, which was supposed to track Astarael's life, the building of the Drakor kingdom and all that good stuff

Thoughts And Website Spotlight

November 17th 2009 12:22
Hi everyone. It's my second day of getting nothing done so I'm lowering my goal down to three hundred and fifty thousand. At this rate, that is much more attainable. I just need to pray that this weekend is good for productivity...

I'm sure there are a lot of other people in the same boat at this point, whether their goal be fifty thousand or one hundred thousand or just to finish the book wherever it's meant to end. To all of you-try to keep up a minimum word count during the week, and I wish you all a productive weekend

Week Three

November 16th 2009 12:10
So yesterday was the halfway point-you should be around 25, 000 words right now, because that's halfway through 50K. Don't get discouraged if you aren't-there is always more time than you think there is, and you can always make time. Even ten thousand words is just a productive weekend or maybe two-and there are two left.

I'm not going to say much more on this because I'm really rather tired still

I'm exhausted, I'm at 170K, so I'm really behind, and I don't have much else to say because my brain is dead...

Hope everyone else is doing well.

150K and thoughts

November 13th 2009 11:52
Well at this point I'm a little behind where I need to be, but I did just hit 150K and am on my way to bed...

I've finished Phoenix Falling and it's an absolutely heartbreaking tale. I really liked the way I wrapped it up, although I knew that was how the story was going to end, the actual writing turned out better than I thought

Thoughts and a Good Blog

November 12th 2009 12:56
I am currently sitting at 125K, and according to my math today, my math yesterday really, really sucked and I'm actually about 20K behind where I need to be. I'm working out the details of how I'm going to catch up on that, but I have faith in myself that I can do it and that I will make the 400K at the end of this month, bar untimely death of me or someone close to me.

I am coming to the end of Phoenix Falling and I must say that I am amazed with how this book has turned out. It has tied in with Moonshadow's Guardian, and the suspicion I've had all this time that these worlds were connected and in the same universe has indeed been confirmed, in a beautiful and heartbreaking tale

100K!!!! And Other Thoughts

November 11th 2009 12:36
Well, 110. But 100K is the victory here. I did the math and I'm only 3K behind where I need to be to hit 400K, but I'm more like 15K behind where I want to be, and I know I'm not going to really be able to make that up.

But this post is more about thoughts than that. It's more about the pep talk that I got last night and my thoughts on it. My thoughts on what was said

Notes

November 10th 2009 10:28
I only hit 90K last night as I was supernaturally tired, but I have long days and nights ahead of me in which I can write quite a lot, so I am not worried about hitting my goal. At this moment in time I'm ahead of schedule for four hundred thousand words, the schedule that I worked out, and if everything goes well I will continue to be ahead of schedule.

The Nanowrimo site has been down now longer than I have ever known it to be down before during Nano season, and I can only hope that it is restored promptly. The regional Nanowrimo chat that my region runs has also been shut down for a few days, and it's killing me, making it much harder for me to inspire myself

Pep Talk: Beginning Of Week Two

November 9th 2009 01:45
So now we are at the end of week one and the beginning of week two, and at this point in time you should be at around thirteen thousand words. At this point, if you've managed to follow the pace I suggested, you should be closer to twenty thousand words.

By this point in time you have written more words of fiction than most people do in a lifetime in one week. Just think about that for a minute. You have already done something to be proud of, just by signing up, just for trying to succeed, for even writing ten words you have done something to be proud of this month

Backtrack

November 8th 2009 18:51
So I wrote a blog post yesterday, and for some reason it never published. I'm kind of pissed about this, for obvious reasons, namely because I was attempting to do NaBloPoMo. But apparently not.

So while I fume about failing NaBloPoMo because of technologyphail, might as well update on the word count

Fifty Thousand!!

November 6th 2009 12:48
I hit fifty thousand words today, and am going to bed sitting at 52, 206 words so far. I'm aiming to write a lot more this weekend and I'm really proud of what I've accomplished so far.

For those of you who are nowhere near where I am-you're not supposed to be. There are still twenty-four days left to write your novel. You're supposed to be at 10, 020 or so words tomorrow, so if you're close to that, you're pretty much right on track

Excerpt: Phoenix Falling

November 5th 2009 12:06
So I started in on Phoenix falling today and so far that novel stands at around 13, 000 words and I stand at around 45, 000 words in total. I'm pretty happy with this, considering that my goal for tomorrow was originally 42K, so I'm ahead of myself.

You should be at around 6, 666 words right now if you're aiming for 50, 000 words. If you aren't there, never fear-you have a weekend coming up, and those can work wonders for your word count

Word Count Update

November 4th 2009 11:58
I'm officially at 30K now... so far so good... I'm looking forward to a large writing marathon. I'm hoping to hit 50K by Friday, which I should if I keep up the current pace, and then write another fifty or sixty thousand words this weekend. If I manage that, I'll be right on track and I should actually hit four hundred thousand words. I'm wondering when the inspiration is going to die, and I'm praying it doesn't happen until December first.

To hit fifty thousand words you should be around five thousand words right now, so if you're around there, you're good, give or take a few hundred words. Not much else for me to say, except that I'm glad you're still reading and bearing with me through my lame posts. I've got a great pep talk ready for the end of this week/beginning of next week
