Thoughts...

November 25th 2009 12:54
We are coming to the end of Nanowrimo, of November, and hopefully of our novels. It's been for many a rough November-part of a rough year-and thus it has been difficult to keep ourselves writing through the hard times.

My goal has lowered from 400K to 350K to 300K and finally to 250K, as depression and business have taken their hold on my life. The fourth anniversary of my dad's death fast approaches, and while I will not be able to say that I did better than last year, I will be able to say that I did well, that I am following my dreams as Daddy would have wanted me to.

After I finished Phoenix Falling I lost a lot of momentum. The book came together very well for me and I didn't really have a proper plan of what to do next. When it was over it was kind of one of those 'dur' moments for me, staring at a brand new blank word file and just not knowing what to do next.

I'm really disappointed in myself. I know that I've had the extra burden of school, with 8 hours a day five days a week-or as many as I've attended, which is at least three or four-taken out of my time, which I didn't have to deal with last year. I should be able to cut myself more slack, but I can't find it in me to do so because this is Nanowrimo. This is November, without fail my most productive writing month.

This is Nanowrimo, the time when I am most in touch with my writerly self and when I get the most enjoyment out of my craft and out of the company of other writers.

Nanowrimo revolutionized writing in that not only did it make it truly accessible for all people who have an internet connection, but it brought people together. What was once a solitary activity has become based on community with the creation of Nanowrimo. Where most writers spend most of the year writing in solitude, Nanowrimo gives them a chance to really come out of their shells, to meet other people who love to write and to write with other people. And many communities have been spawned from Nanowrimo that have also helped this to happen. It's a great thing.

For those of you who have participated, who feel that Nanowrimo has changed your life, I once again ask you to sponsor me by clicking here. I'm really hoping for just another five dollar donation so that I can hit the magical twenty-five dollars and get donation presents... pretty post card and sticker and such.

As we come into the end of this month, don't worry if you aren't closing in on fifty thousand words or the end of your novel. Know that there is always next year-there will always be a next year, as long as the Office Of Letters And Light raise enough money for there to be a next year-and that there is always National Novel Finishing Month, nanofimo.org, which is a challenge to finish your novel in December.

I'm rooting for you.

A Beautiful Tuesday?

November 24th 2009 21:31
Today is the Tuesday when the Nanowrimo team is trying to raise $100, 000 dollars. So, just some encouragement and please-type stuff.

I'm pretty sure that a lot of you guys who have been reading my blog over the last month are Nanowrimo participants, or considering Nanowrimo, or something like that. And if you've been reading my blog for more than a couple of days, you've seen my posts about how much Nanowrimo has helped me reach my writing goals and how much it has changed my life-all that good stuff.

I'm asking you now, if my blog has helped you with your writing in any way, shape, or form, and if you have even five dollars that you can spare, please sponsor me by clicking here and clicking on 'sponsor me'.

After my last call for donations someone donated $10. I just want to say thank you to this person. If you would like me to acknowledge your name and link to a website on my blog (I'm going to be doing a big thank you post on December first) then please let me know via email-you can find me at diannalgunn@gmail.com.

So now I'm sitting at twenty dollars in donations, which makes me a very happy person. I'm really hoping to make it to just twenty-five dollars, wanting only twenty more dollars, because if I can raise five more dollars, I will get the twenty-five dollars fundraising gift goodies.

Here's an extra incentive to sponsor me-if you sponsor me and send me an email, you will get all of what I've done so far for my poetry collection Bleed (which has been put on hold for November) AND a collection of Nanowrimo excerpts-one scene from Phoenix Falling, one scene from Snapshots and one scene from Fallen, the novel I am starting tonight.

For those of you who love to write and who want to help keep Nanowrimo, an event which has inspired thousands to write novels and come to really appreciate writing, now is the time to donate.

Thanks so much for reading,
~Dianna

Struggling

November 24th 2009 20:08
I honestly can't believe how much I'm struggling this November in terms of my writing. I think that just going to school is a big part of that. It's taking eight hours out of my day, and, well, I'm not used to that. I don't like that. I need that time for writing... le sigh. Not only does it take time out of my day, but every day it wears me out. I'm tired by the time I get home. It's ridiculous.

I'm glad that I don't feel alone in this. A lot of Nanoers who, like me, reach for the stars and aim for crazy high word counts, are struggling more this year than usual. A lot of others who usually don't go much beyond, but don't have problems hitting 50K, are struggling. This hasn't been a very good year for a lot of people, what with the recession and all that, and it's showing in Nanowrimo terms.

Four short days... on Saturday my dad will have been dead for four years. Almost half a decade he's been gone. I can still picture the day he died like it was yesterday. I still remember him, I remember how much I loved him, all the good times we had together... but they don't really make it any better.

Maybe that's why my writing is just not flowing. Maybe not. I don't know what the problem is, but whatever is wrong, it's only making me more depressed. All I want to do at this point is end up with a better word count than last year's, even if it's only by two or three thousand words. And I still need to write pretty much 100, 000 to do that.

I thought at the overnighter that I had beaten the block-in a 24 hour time period I managed to write 24K and change. But apparently I didn't really accomplish anything-in the end I'm just as blocked as I ever was and in fact I think I'm even more blocked.

Anyway. Enough of me ranting about how much my life sucks. Thanks for bearing with me, guys.

Excerpt: Snapshots

This is kind of a long scene for an excerpt, but I can't just give you guys part of the scene, because that would not be very cool of me.

Overnight Writing Session

November 22nd 2009 23:41
So I'm in a bit of a... state... at the moment. But that's not what I'm here to talk about, those are my own personal problems. Let's just say life sucks, and once again, without fail, the end of November is sucking.

All right

Week Four...

November 21st 2009 18:16
This is the second last weekend of November, and we're all scrambling to hit our desired word counts now. Hopefully in the next two days you'll be able to put aside some extra time to write, time to write three or four or five thousand words so that you can hit your goal if need be, or just to give yourself some padding in case this last week turns out rough.

Week four is always the hardest week for me. Everything is slowly but surely grinding to a halt. I'm already mourning the fact that once it's over, there are a lot of people I won't see again until next year, both locally and on the forums I love so much. I know that the forums are slowly but surely going to fade into inactivity-but I also know that there will always be people who will wander back in throughout the year and that in these people the spirit of Nanowrimo lives on

Fallen? And Notes On Snapshots

November 20th 2009 14:27
So I'm at 185K, not moving as quickly as I would like but I'm confident that I can still hit 350K, and I'm realizing that I might need to change some things.

Jihad has grown from one book into seven into what is probably ten, with the addition of Shanni-a book about a half-Goddess and her life-and Fallen. Fallen is something that I'm not a hundred percent sure that I'll write right now, but having written some scenes, it looks quite probable

Word Count And Stuff

November 19th 2009 13:13
So I'm at 180K, rolling along nicely, back in the game. I'm 100% sure at this point that I'll be able to hit 350K. It's just going to take a helluva lot of work. And a lot less of me getting sidetracked. There are no more days off for the month of November.

I feel six different kinds of recovered from my weekend

Back Into The Flow Of Things

November 18th 2009 20:48
So I'm back into the flow of things, my mind is working after a brief OD on sleep, and I'm back to writing.

Now that Phoenix Falling is finished I'm working on something Entirely Different. It was supposed to be a book called Astarael, which was supposed to track Astarael's life, the building of the Drakor kingdom and all that good stuff

Thoughts And Website Spotlight

November 17th 2009 12:22
Hi everyone. It's my second day of getting nothing done so I'm lowering my goal down to three hundred and fifty thousand. At this rate, that is much more attainable. I just need to pray that this weekend is good for productivity...

I'm sure there are a lot of other people in the same boat at this point, whether their goal be fifty thousand or one hundred thousand or just to finish the book wherever it's meant to end. To all of you-try to keep up a minimum word count during the week, and I wish you all a productive weekend

Week Three

November 16th 2009 12:10
So yesterday was the halfway point-you should be around 25, 000 words right now, because that's halfway through 50K. Don't get discouraged if you aren't-there is always more time than you think there is, and you can always make time. Even ten thousand words is just a productive weekend or maybe two-and there are two left.

I'm not going to say much more on this because I'm really rather tired still

Stuff.

November 15th 2009 23:12
I'm exhausted, I'm at 170K, so I'm really behind, and I don't have much else to say because my brain is dead...

Hope everyone else is doing well.

150K and thoughts

November 13th 2009 11:52
Well at this point I'm a little behind where I need to be, but I did just hit 150K and am on my way to bed...

I've finished Phoenix Falling and it's an absolutely heartbreaking tale. I really liked the way I wrapped it up, although I knew that was how the story was going to end, the actual writing turned out better than I thought

Thoughts and a Good Blog

November 12th 2009 12:56
I am currently sitting at 125K, and according to my math today, my math yesterday really, really sucked and I'm actually about 20K behind where I need to be. I'm working out the details of how I'm going to catch up on that, but I have faith in myself that I can do it and that I will make the 400K at the end of this month, bar untimely death of me or someone close to me.

I am coming to the end of Phoenix Falling and I must say that I am amazed with how this book has turned out. It has tied in with Moonshadow's Guardian, and the suspicion I've had all this time that these worlds were connected and in the same universe has indeed been confirmed, in a beautiful and heartbreaking tale

100K!!!! And Other Thoughts

November 11th 2009 12:36
Well, 110. But 100K is the victory here. I did the math and I'm only 3K behind where I need to be to hit 400K, but I'm more like 15K behind where I want to be, and I know I'm not going to really be able to make that up.

But this post is more about thoughts than that. It's more about the pep talk that I got last night and my thoughts on it. My thoughts on what was said

Notes

November 10th 2009 10:28
I only hit 90K last night as I was supernaturally tired, but I have long days and nights ahead of me in which I can write quite a lot, so I am not worried about hitting my goal. At this moment in time I'm ahead of schedule for four hundred thousand words, the schedule that I worked out, and if everything goes well I will continue to be ahead of schedule.

The Nanowrimo site has been down now longer than I have ever known it to be down before during Nano season, and I can only hope that it is restored promptly. The regional Nanowrimo chat that my region runs has also been shut down for a few days, and it's killing me, making it much harder for me to inspire myself

So as I'm writing this I'm sitting at 80, 222.

If your goal is 50K, you should be sitting at around 13K

Pep Talk: Beginning Of Week Two

November 9th 2009 01:45
So now we are at the end of week one and the beginning of week two, and at this point in time you should be at around thirteen thousand words. At this point, if you've managed to follow the pace I suggested, you should be closer to twenty thousand words.

By this point in time you have written more words of fiction than most people do in a lifetime in one week. Just think about that for a minute. You have already done something to be proud of, just by signing up, just for trying to succeed, for even writing ten words you have done something to be proud of this month

Backtrack

November 8th 2009 18:51
So I wrote a blog post yesterday, and for some reason it never published. I'm kind of pissed about this, for obvious reasons, namely because I was attempting to do NaBloPoMo. But apparently not.

So while I fume about failing NaBloPoMo because of technologyphail, might as well update on the word count
