Thoughts...

November 25th 2009 12:54
We are coming to the end of Nanowrimo, of November, and hopefully of our novels. It's been for many a rough November-part of a rough year-and thus it has been difficult to keep ourselves writing through the hard times.

My goal has lowered from 400K to 350K to 300K and finally to 250K, as depression and business have taken their hold on my life. The fourth anniversary of my dad's death fast approaches, and while I will not be able to say that I did better than last year, I will be able to say that I did well, that I am following my dreams as Daddy would have wanted me to.

After I finished Phoenix Falling I lost a lot of momentum. The book came together very well for me and I didn't really have a proper plan of what to do next. When it was over it was kind of one of those 'dur' moments for me, staring at a brand new blank word file and just not knowing what to do next.

I'm really disappointed in myself. I know that I've had the extra burden of school, with 8 hours a day five days a week-or as many as I've attended, which is at least three or four-taken out of my time, which I didn't have to deal with last year. I should be able to cut myself more slack, but I can't find it in me to do so because this is Nanowrimo. This is November, without fail my most productive writing month.

This is Nanowrimo, the time when I am most in touch with my writerly self and when I get the most enjoyment out of my craft and out of the company of other writers.

Nanowrimo revolutionized writing in that not only did it make it truly accessible for all people who have an internet connection, but it brought people together. What was once a solitary activity has become based on community with the creation of Nanowrimo. Where most writers spend most of the year writing in solitude, Nanowrimo gives them a chance to really come out of their shells, to meet other people who love to write and to write with other people. And many communities have been spawned from Nanowrimo that have also helped this to happen. It's a great thing.

For those of you who have participated, who feel that Nanowrimo has changed your life, I once again ask you to sponsor me by clicking here. I'm really hoping for just another five dollar donation so that I can hit the magical twenty-five dollars and get donation presents... pretty post card and sticker and such.

As we come into the end of this month, don't worry if you aren't closing in on fifty thousand words or the end of your novel. Know that there is always next year-there will always be a next year, as long as the Office Of Letters And Light raise enough money for there to be a next year-and that there is always National Novel Finishing Month, nanofimo.org, which is a challenge to finish your novel in December.

I'm rooting for you.
