The Hardships of Character Death
July 22nd 2008 09:48
I role play. Somewhat obsessively. All right, very obsessively. And I grow very close to my characters, in role play and in writing.
One of them died today; I cried. Actually cried. Killing characters that I'm fond of is something I do because I have to, not because I particularly want to. And it can hurt.
It really can. And sometimes you refuse to let go-write background stories, alternate universes, and all that. When a character dies, you mourn. Any writer is sad to kill one of their children-but we all do it. How do we get over it? Time, moving on to other stuff, and more writing.
This post I've decided to honour my favourite characters that I've killed (in projects I don't plan on getting published, so no spoilers):
RIP
Litharukia,
Sorry, but it was necessary. It was the best way to end the book so I did it.
RIP
Tara,
I'm sorry that you died-it wasn't planned, I promise. But it did provide me with the next book's entire plot. So yeah...
RIP
Neavera,
I'll love you forever. That simple. Sorry Shaiyanne blew up the planet you were on...
RIP
Saiku,
Sorry about that, but I liked Neavera better.
RIP
Ialiea,
I guess after five years role playing as you I should kill you. You're an old girl now. Sorry. You were good for the time; but nobody RPs wolf anymore, so it's time for you to go.
RIP
Di,
You were awesome and had a good run. The first time you died, it was necessary for my plans. The second-well that's a bundle of outrage, and you will be avenged. I promise.
Love,
~Dianna

I've never had to keep a character alive that was particularly annoying. But I think character death is more 'sad' than 'annoying', so I don't think you quite have the right word.
