The End of Dear Diary
May 31st 2010 16:43
Today is both the last day of May and the last day of the Dear Diary workshop. Now you have to decide how to end your Dear Diary project. Do you want your character to get sick of writing a diary, or do you want them to have filled their notebook? Do you want their diary to end because a certain trauma has ended, or do you want it to continue, even if you aren't writing it? More importantly, do you want to continue it to a logical ending point in its story, or is it ready to be put down?
How you end your Dear Diary project is as dependent on your character as it is on you. Maybe your character has been writing journals for years, and ends each one in a specific way. Maybe your character isn't ready to stop writing yet. Maybe your character wanted it to be over and done with last week and is glad to see it over.
Ask your character how they would like to end their diary, and the words should pour from the soul.

I loved that there could be a natural conclusion to the diary. That there is life beyond this point leaves me satisfied.
I find it curious that a "natural" 30 day story arc emerged. I don't think I planned that at first but then ... as the ending neared, I felt compelled to do so ... if only to keep the voice of Elgin from haunting me with unfinished business. : )
I am triple pleased with this project. I know a lot more about Elgin's world and really love that I had a chance to explore it and right on the heels of Script Frenzy. His was the third script I did and in some ways the "loosest" ... The first I had well-plotted, the second was just horrible but a way of figuring out screen plays and the third was Elgin's. Many of the characters there appeared in the journal and I am glad to know more about them.
I quite like the character emerging as Elgin. I feel like we have made friends and I get what makes him tick.
I am sorely tempted to bring him back in Novebmer if I could find a plot for him.
This exercise has been an amazing way to get to know him and I never would have a) written one or b) figured out so much about Elgin if it hadn't been for you. For this I am grateful. : )
'Kay. : ) You totally need to tweet if you do another project. : ) Seriously. I'll play again. : )
Good luck w exams and other year-end formalities!!!! I'll be sending good parrot karma your way. : )
Cheers!

Fictional Worlds
The beauty of your last diary entry absolutely amazes me. I feel like this story is over, but there will be another story. Elgin's tale is not finished; just this part of it. I love it.
I didn't get all the Dear Diaries done. Running this workshop has been a strain, and I've been all over the place. I've got just a couple weeks left so it's really crunch time now.
Keep reading throughout the next few days-I'm going to be writing up some of the things you can do with your Dear Diary project.
There isn't any full workshop for June-just the wind down from the Dear Diary workshop-but I'm working on workshops for the rest of the year. I've got some big plans. I'd love to see you stick around to see them come to life.
