Changes

August 12th 2010 12:14

As I'm sure you can tell, Fictional Worlds has undergone a major facelift over the last couple of days. It all began with me creating a banner-I've made two, including the one you see above-and then I changed the blog's theme to match the banner more.

They say a change is as good as a rest and while I'm not quite sure I believe them-or ever did believe them-I am quite happy with the physical changes to Fictional Worlds. I am trying to make other changes-changes in my schedule, my commitments, and my life overall-and this is just the beginning. Over the next few months I will be sharing writing related changes here and more personal changes on my other blog.

I am incredibly grateful to all those who have stayed with me throughout the last two months during which I've posted less than half as much as I should. It's time to think about my commitment both to my passion of writing and to my love of blogging.

While this summer has been almost dull for me-without any of the trips out of town I wanted or very much writing completed-it's also been full of change. My change is largely inspired by a very dear friend of mine, Sam, who spent the first month of this summer in the Bahamas. The lucky girl who is one of the most talented artists I've ever met was artist in residence at a summer camp.

She's back now and with her came the beautiful shell that you see in this post. Seeing her again and seeing just how much she's grown as a person and an artist over this last month is incredibly inspiring. Although it makes me ache for a place that isn't here and desparately wish I could escape the city, it also brings me great joy. The shell sits on my writing desk now and it's an inspiration.

Sam has big dreams and I have dreams that are just as big, and together we'll accomplish them. We have to make some changes to ourselves and to our lifestyles but someday we'll travel the world, and someday the two of us will change the world around us.

It all starts now in those precious last few months between being dependant and almost being a kid and being an adult, independant and ready to face anything the world has to throw at me. This is the summer of change and there are crazy times ahead.

Come with me on my journey?

5 Excellent Writing Blog Posts

September 10th 2009 12:17
Hi everyone. So, in keeping with my blog posting schedule (I'm surprised I've kept to it this long) today's post is a list of five great blog posts about writing. I've been wandering around the blogosphere looking into different writing blogs for a while now, always looking for something new to read, and today I found some great new blogs and posts.

1.25 Best Writing Blogs 2009 I found this linked to on another blog, and I've found some great posts for this entry on blogs that I've been looking through found via this list. Editor Unleashed is a popular blog amongst writers, and while I don't read it often, I do find it useful sometimes. The blogger asked people to nominate blogs and then vote on them for this, and the winners have been selected and are now linked to for all to find. Muahahahaha?

2.8 Tips For Finding Your Voice a great blog entry about finding your voice as a writer. This is a blog written by an editor who's worked with a number of well-known writers over the years. It's a great read.

3.Milestones, Goals and Rewards an established writer talking about writing milestones and goals. It's not a long post or too informative, but it's nice and makes an interesting read. I like the writer's style.

4.Stories To Pave The Path To Dreams a great post about how this writer has made a journey with her writing and is now ready to move towards the world of becoming a published author. I really really like this girl's writing style.

5.How To Become Professionally Dead To Me a post on Publisher Weekly's blog Genreville showing how one writer screwed himself out of a contract-or even further reading. Wow. I think if I had read that... it wouldn't have ended well for whoever wrote it, that's all I'll say to that.

Now I have to face school and pray that I'm in. Have a good day everyone, and thanks for reading.

Review: Stephen King's On Writing

August 24th 2009 21:04
On Writing by Stephen King

Not having finished the book that I'm reading right now, which is a very very long book (but great) and not wanting to do a website review, I decided to review a great book I've already read.

Stephen King says early on that his book is short, because he doesn't want to fill it full of crap like most writing books are. (His words not mine) The book is half memoir, showing early experiences in his life that made him the writer he is today, and half writing tips and lessons.

Stephen King is a great writer, one of the most famous in the horror genre, and a favourite of mine that was also a favourite of Daddy's. Of all the books I've ever read by King, this is my absolute favourite. Why?

Because it doesn't have a bunch of nonsense in it, which was Stephen's goal. The information inside of it is pretty much applicable to any writer. The memories are funny and heart-wrenching and show us why Stephen chose to write horror. It's full of good advice, interesting information and it's all presented in a matter-of-fact kind of way, which I like.

On Writing is a great read for any writer, one to show a great style of writing, which would be King's, and two for great information and entertaining memories. It's totally worth the price.

Fiction Factor: Outlining

The above is an article about outlining which some of you may find useful. It lists three different types of outline and describes them briefly with advantages and disadvantages. It's a good article on a great website for writers at every stage in their career

5 Wonderful Writing Communities

August 22nd 2009 23:07
Writing is, for the most part, a solitary thing. You spend hours by yourself on the computer typing away, getting your story out onto the screen, replacing the blank white screen with a screen full of black text.

But one of the things that has influenced and helped me most as a writer is community, starting with some communities I've mentioned in previous posts (some of them quite often). I'm a mamber of several writing communities, and each one has helped me in its own way

On Fiction: Outlining Part One

August 20th 2009 22:18
I've decided to write a series of posts about outlining. There will be five posts in this series, each one focusing on a different type of outlining. The first post will focus on my style of outline and the following ones will be reviews of different forms of outlining available online.

Not every type of outline works for every writer. Personally my outline is very basic, showing the biggest scenes that need to happen and what order they need to happen in. Some writers on the Nanowrimo forums (Kateness, who wrote 800K last year, being one of these) write outlines that can be up to 10, 000 words in and of themselves

5 Reasons To Start A Blog

August 17th 2009 06:32
In light of my recent blogaversary I've written some posts about blogging, which is not usually my focus here, as I like to focus more on fiction writing. (I do a lot more of that.) Over the last two years I've really come to love blogging. If you're a writer, and you don't have a blog, I think it's high time you started one.

Here are five reasons to start a blog

Continuing along, plodding as slowly as I am, I am now on the seventh excersize in 31 Days To A Better Blog. The ones that have been going on behind the scenes have been reading exercises and I've found some great reading along the way. I'm happy with the way this is going so far.

So I'm going to link to five great blogs for writers, and tell you exactly why they are great blogs for writers. They aren't in any particular order of awesomeness, it's just in the order I thought of them

Harry Potter Review: Part One

August 10th 2009 17:47
Just thought I would let you guys know that I decided to do the first part of my Harry Potter review lens before leaving for the cottage. I've also decided not to do any best-of posts, seeing as how I worked my butt off yesterday making a best-of lens. I spent two or three hours working on the darn thing, so I figure I'm going to just leave that as it is and not to a best-of at this moment in time.

Here's the link to the Harry Potter review lens

New Project: A Cutter's Journey

July 31st 2009 09:26
Really Long Link

That's the website for my newest project, A Cutter's Journey. I'll be starting that on Monday. It's going to be my personal story of cutting as well as several inspiring quotes collected by a number of cutters. It's also going to include statistics to do with cutting, facts about cutting, suicide and depression, and the back will have a long list of links

Hi Everyone

July 29th 2009 16:01
Note: I've decided to do one last Dear Diary. This way it will be somewhat more wrapped up and not just end; I'll be tying down a couple loose threads and making it feel more like an ending.

I had a good night last night; went out and partied with friends on the beach. Saw some people screwed up on drugs-they're always funny-and some beautiful water. Got to watch the sun set, this time, on the beach

Working

January 25th 2009 08:03
Writing isn't always easy. The words sometimes come only with force. Sometimes we get bogged down trying to create our worlds. We get fed up when we find out that somebody's already had the same idea. We get depressed, bored, fed up, angry with all the world and with our muses.

We get angry because everything we're writing sounds like crap. We get angry because we feel we aren't getting anywhere

Learning

January 17th 2009 03:52
Writing is in large part a learning process. A writer needs to be open to new things; this is why we have classes and workshops and books about writing. Not all things will work for you, this is true. We're all different. You probably won't find a class that's absolutely perfect for you. A method won't always work.

But if you don't try new things, how can you possibly know? Everything changes; our writing should too. Let's take the example of a well known author, JK Rowling of the Harry Potter series

When Everything Is Just Too Much

October 4th 2008 23:28
So let me tell you something. School is stressing me out; I'm trying to force myself to go but it isn't working very well. Things at home aren't pleasant either. I'm stressed; so stressed that I've been sick on and off for two weeks now. Nanowrimo is on the horizon.

It's times like these when anybody-writer or otherwise-starts to wonder about all their obligations and if they're worth it. It's times like these when normally I would abandon the blog for weeks at a time; I'm trying not to. It's sort of working. It's times like these when we just want to throw in the towel

Words On A Page

June 16th 2008 03:56
Writing: the art of putting COHERENT words on a page... and so much more.

Just because you can perform the act of writing words coherently doesn't make you a true writer. A true writer takes talent and hard work. To be a true writer you have to be determined to write, to want to write, to love writing

Writing Work

January 22nd 2008 21:26
I'm praying right now. Praying that I'll get a big gigantic break in my writing. I'm looking for places to submit one of my short stories to (the one that's been sent around and around) and praying that someday SOMETHING will come along.

Right now I'm also on the lookout for poetry competitions and publishers. I'm looking everywhere and hoping that something soon will come through. Within a couple weeks I should know if one of my pieces is getting published

Writing Is Difficult Without Computer

January 20th 2008 00:35
I've got very, very limited computer access right now (as in I only have it at my bf's), so my writing is flopping and so is my blogging.

But I AM alive. Yay.

Been Sick But I'm Back Into It

January 14th 2008 04:16
I've been getting hugely back into my writing as I recover from my stress sickness. I'm getting seriously into it because I want to make a career out of this.

This is my life, this is my dream, this is my career. It is everything to me and it is my only passion-honestly, it's the only thing other than my spirituality that I care about
