Research, Research, Research

Research is something all writers will do at some point in time, if they're any good. Why? Because it needs to be done to make your world all the more real. (And, obviously, if you write nonfiction... well duh.) Because researching human cultures and human histories and religions make you have a better point of view when it comes to your own world.
Even if you're making it up from scratch. The reason why? Because humans are still human, no matter where you put them. Because intelligent life as we call it probably has some of the same traits as humanity-emotionally, mentally, perhaps physically.
Your characters may have interests that you do not share-and things like fishing probably don't change that much from world to world. You'll need to know something about it before your character can.
When I do research, ideas fly to me. Tidbits of information stick out from the rest, and I note them; they'll be useful. I've been known to read through threads filled with information for fun and discover something that gave me a brilliant idea for my characters or my world itself. I use this information.
Research makes your writing more real. Being able to come up with little details which are based off of facts in our world and using those facts to make similar details in your world makes it more real. Comparing a time and a place in your world to one in ours gives it a sense of concrete reality.
Even if it's never directly related, or mentioned in the story, people will notice similarities. It will draw them further into the world. And who knows, maybe while you're researching, you'll come up with a new story idea...
