Prompt Of The Week

July 13th 2010 12:58
Today's prompt is:

Write 500 words about kittens.

My response is:

I met a family of kittens once. One was black, one was gray and one was brown. All of them had cute little white paws and every one put a smile on my face. I didn't know what love was until the moment I saw them. At once my heart filled up with joy and the world seemed to be a much happier place. It was the gray kitten that came up to me first.

Three months old, big blue eyes sticking out of a cute little gray face. Him and his brothers; mama cat was nowhere to be found. The black one and the brown one played with each other, but the gray one came to me instead. Ever so gently he rubbed his head up against my leg, and I knew from that moment we were destined to be best friends.

I turned to Michelle, the girl who raised the kittens, and I gave her a big grin.

“I'll take him,” I said, pointing at the little fellow who was still rubbing up against my leg.

“Really? Awesome. I'll have him and a box prepared for you next week,” she said, “just bring me the hundred dollars and he's yours, litter and all included.”

“Thanks,” I said. Michelle really was a pretty girl, with blonde hair and big blue eyes. She wasn't really my type, too nerdy-no glasses but she had the rest of the look-although she did really like me.

I knelt down next to my new kitten and stroked him for a few minutes. Michelle hovered over my shoulder. I don't know if she spent more time staring at me or staring at the kitten, but she spent a lot of time staring. Seeing the kitten was almost like being in love. I could've spent hours playing with him and petting him, but the creeper gaze I was getting from Michelle convinced me to get up after half of one.

I stood up and Michelle appeared at my side almost instantly, grinning at me. It took everything in my power not to shudder as she grabbed one of my arms.

“Are you leaving?” she asked.

“Yeah, I've got places to be,” I said. Lied through my teeth, more like.

“All right, let me just walk you to the door...”

I didn't know it at the time, but not only was the kitten one of the best things that ever happened to me-Alan is still one of my best friends-but Michelle is another one. It took some time, but now she's the love of my life. Just shows that persistence has value.

Your turn

My turn ... 500 on the money.
More Elgin ...

Funny how word use conjures up entire pictures ... you use the phrase "little fellow" ... and I have a whole backstory with those two words. Very distinctive.

I also like the idea "seeing a kitten is almost like being in love." It totally is ... I disintegrate into mush with kitten/puppy contact. Just one big awwww. : )

Hope all is well with your writing arm!

Cheers!

RP,

Quite well written. With every piece I read I enjoy Elgin's voice and character more and more.

My favourite line? "He's an idiot. I'm a vampire."

I really like vampires who keep some of their humanity-and compassion for animals is definitely a good thing in my opinion.

Your story definitely put a smile on my face.
