Pre-Nano Work: Characters
October 10th 2008 22:20
This is a writing exercise to learn more about your character and keep an on-file idea of who they are, which is basically like a profile.
Character Profile
-----------------
Name:
Age:
Race: (If your world has nonhumans)
Appearance:
Personality:
Bio: (This can be as detailed or not-detailed as you like)
I then write (all my notes are handwritten) a signature for each character (I have pages of them in some of my poetry books).
I also suggest writing a one page, hand-written diary from the character's point of view, to get a better feel for their personality and their voice. I haven't done this yet, but that's because I've been slacking off; I do want to do that though, and soon.
Your turn. And good luck!

If you can borrow a copy of Lajos Egri's 'The Art of Dramatic Writing'?
Or buy a really cheap copy?
You'll find that he devotes a complete chapter to this. It's well worth the read.

I've read quite a few different takes on characterization, and quite a few different activities and character sheets. I think all of them work for someone; what I post here is what works for me and will hopefully work for others like me.

That's the sign of a strong character, I suppose-they won't get out of your face.
