Pre-Nano Work: Brainstorm
October 10th 2008 00:41
I'm back to talking about Nanowrimo today. It's only a couple more weeks away, after all. For those of you who don't have an idea yet, who are so far flying by the seat of your pants and would like a bit of a plan, I hope this is the right place. I'm going to be doing a lot of my pre-Nano work over the next three weeks and I've decided to share some of it.
I want you to answer the following questions:
~What are your favorite non-human races?
~What kind of culture fascinates you?
~What time period interests you the most?
~Would you rather write in the past, the future, or an alternate reality?
~What kind of people do you want to write about?
Once you have one solid fact-let's say 'My world needs elves' is your fact-put that in a bubble at the center of your paper. Answer each of these questions and put the answer in a bubble, connected to the one at the center.
~Are your elves tall or short?
~What kind of culture do they live in?
~Are they musically inclined?
~What kind of myths would they have?
~What do they look like?
~What other cultures do they interact with?
~How do they get along with these other cultures?
~How are they raised?
There are many more questions you can ask yourself but these are just a few. Build on the ideas until one of them gives you a good plot, and then give yourself a bit of crash-course planning before rushing into November head-first and blinded.
Next up: Character Building.

Apparently you did love it...
Everything works in reverse...
I explained Nano in another comment. I'm always talking about it though, so I'm sure there'll be another full post explaining it soon.
