The Magical Moments

September 10th 2008 08:46
Why do we live life?

For those moments of magic, those moments of beauty and joy and love.

Why do we read stories?

For the magical moments, the moments in which we can feel with the character; of joy, bliss, beauty, love, and in some books even sorrow is beautiful.

Either I'm reading too much Anne Rice, or I'm onto something here. The moments which effect us in the most profound ways are most often beautiful if seen from the right point of view. Some, like a death by cancer, cannot be made into anything beautiful no matter how hard you try; but even the loss of love, and many other forms of death, can be made beautiful.

It is this beauty that the writer is ever trying to capture. This essence; the magical moments, the magic of the moment, the magic in the air, of the location, of the people. This proves difficult on many occasions, and to me has seemed ever easier to do with poetry. Most prose just doesn't have that quality to it, the intangible quality that keeps you enthralled and makes even the most atrocious acts beautiful.

There are a few examples of books which hold that tone, the tone of magic and beauty, the whole way, or almost the whole way, through. Anne Rice, which I read a lot of, has plenty of examples of this. Lady of the Hay, whose author's name I'll remember someday, I promise, holds that tone throughout much of the book. From what I understand, George R. R. Martin's A Song Of Ice And Fire has some of this as well, although I haven't had a chance to actually read through that series.

Capturing the magical essence of life is our duty as writers. And it is difficult, yes, but the end result is beauty that is absolutely worth it. The work that can fully capture that sense is our best work, and should be shown off to whoever is willing to listen. This is a writer's life, this is a writer's work. To capture that essence and share it with others.

I had a magical moment of my own very recently; and it is a sweet story that someday, somewhere, I will tell. And the world, I hope, will hear me-and I will be able to capture it completely, I hope. For it is one of those things that happens maybe once in a lifetime, and it has made me so happy of late that I can barely believe it. Things are looking up now, they really are.

Can you capture a magic moment?

Do you remember a magic moment?

Turn that moment into a piece of writing... and do your best... to capture the essence within.

Conventional English Classes

September 6th 2008 11:22
As I'm waiting for a response from my editor, I'm going to be here today and possibly tomorrow as well. And in the spirit of the start of school, my first post is going to be about the evils of grade nine English.

As some of you may remember, I disappeared for quite a while last year from Orble, as I was stressed out to an extreme level; well, I disappeared from school, too, and as a result I'm retaking all of my grade nine classes (with minor changes) this year. Which means I'm taking English.

I may be crazy-in fact, I'm pretty sure I am-but English class bores me almost to tears. I have had incredible experiences in English classes. I have had great teachers, and in fact if not for English class I would never have gotten into poetry. Would you believe that I started reading 'late'? But that's another matter altogether. Now I'm at university level English.

Which makes my life incredibly dull. I am in the hardest level of English possible, and I'm still bored out of my mind. We're doing some poetry stuff, and it's good, it isn't where they make you write haikus or anything horrible like that. But we're also doing essays. And essays bore the hell out of me.

Especially when the teacher expects us to dissect one, and then write our own, and plan it, rough draft it, and then hand in a polished final draft. I have a hard time working in drafts. Every single post on this blog is my first draft. In grade eight, I was 'good at editing and revising', and I never had time for a rough draft, because I was a last-minute type of girl.

I guess it's just that my brain works in severely different ways from the norm they're supposed to teach for. I just wish there was some alternative English program that I could take; this class is so far exceedingly dull, and it promises to be so for the rest of the semester. Especially because I think I might have to read Romeo and Juliet. I hate Romeo and Juliet. I really do.

That said, I have to take it, and in the upcoming years English will hopefully become less dull and I'll actually enjoy myself. Not necessarily find it challenging, but enjoyable. I guess that's a part of being a writer-English class can get boring.

How does any of this actually pertain to writing? It does, in a way. Because I love to write, and so I have a passion for some of the work we do in class; but I don't love essays, and thus class can be dull. Personally, I'd much rather take a specific writing-focused class. In fact, I would love to take a ten day writing class.

Like Alpha, which is in the states. But that isn't an option for me at this point in time; so I will soldier through the boredom and hope for better days.

Into The Shadows: Print

September 1st 2008 06:37
I was bored, I went to Lulu and put up Into The Shadows as a print book for $8.06 US. Why? Because I like print books. It was easy and just seemed like a reasonable thing to do at the time.

It's available on the same page as the other one, in other words, here:

Really Long Link

My goal is to publish a poetry collection every year, in both print and ebook format, on Lulu, for as long as I can possibly maintain such a pace. Why? Because I like getting my writing out there, and I might as well do it this way.

Why Do I Write?

September 1st 2008 05:57
I've written about this topic before. But I've been thinking about it a lot lately, so I decided to talk about why I write-not only this blog, but everything else that I write.

I write because without writing, I would be locked away with no outlet to express myself

Now On Lulu: Into The Shadows

August 25th 2008 22:29
I went to an anime convention this weekend. Therefore I had no time to write (or eat or sleep) in between my events and my hanging out and everything else. I will say that I had a wonderful time. But I'll also admit that that was not the point of this post.

The point was to say that I've put up my poetry book, Into The Shadows, up for sale as an eBook on Lulu. I didn't do too much with it, it's a short thing with a bunch of poems, notes about one of the sets, and a rather small intro

A Change Of Plans

August 22nd 2008 12:31
I've just received a rejection for Moonshadow's Guardian and that is now the one I'm looking to publish with Scribe (http://scribe.nediex.com/). I will also be putting together and publishing a poetry collection on Lulu, with a few extras thrown in.

The plan for my poetry collection includes a dedicated section which mentions a lot of the people who I've connected to over the internet, and I'm probably going to throw in a few pages of my short, poetic-prose project Founding of Moonshadow. There will also be a brief introduction to the work

MATURE CONTENT

I have no idea who said that first. Nor do I really care. It makes the point I'm trying to get across, and that is the important thing.

Last year I wrote a story, had it critiqued, and edited it a fair bit-almost rewriting it completely. I sent it to seven markets and was rejected by all of them. For a while, I didn't submit it anywhere, because I didn't have any good markets to submit it to

Publishing is the dream of many, many writers. Including myself. Publication can be difficult; to be a successful writer borders the 'pipe dream' line. It isn't quite a pipe dream-it's doable with enough work, persistence, and talent-but it isn't easy or for the weak of heart.

Take, for example, JK Rowlings. She's an incredible success story, worth billions upon billions of dollars. She was a single mother who submitted to over thirty different publishers. And now she's a rich woman known the world over for her books. I'm not going to comment on their quality; this post isn't ABOUT quality of writing. It's about determination

Write What You Love...

July 18th 2008 05:35
Some people say 'write what you know'. But if I recall correctly, Stephen King and I have the same belief-that it is best to write what you love.

Because we can all write about what we learned in school, but most of us wouldn't want to. We know it-but we do not love it. And if we are forced to write something we do not love, it is by far a lesser product than what it would be if we loved it

A very very short poem

July 15th 2008 18:46
I was genuinely proud of myself for this poem. I love it to bits because of what it means: I'm learning Japanese! I love Japanese, I have an appreciation for the culture, the anime, the manga, the language. The religion. To me Japan is a place of beauty-culturally if not physically.

And this is why putting this in my novel felt like such an accomplishment-it comes with translation, of course
