Planning

July 20th 2008 08:50
Planning. Something some writers do, others don't, others do sometimes...

When I plan at all, it's usually a very rough outline to give me an idea of what could happen, not of what neccesarily will. Some of the larger events, of course, HAVE to happen, but most of the time I start off with a basic idea and make stuff up as I go along.

In Moonshadow's Guardian, for example, I created a Telar, or telepathic, plague and had Riana hunt down the villain. For various reasons, this happened with plenty of space left over-and time for me to do other things. Like rebuild an ancient society that lived in ruin.

Jihad, on the other hand, was sort of planned. It was based off an old role playing plot Daddy had used-or, at least, the very beginning was. In a lot of ways, the world in Jihad was designed to resemble our RP worlds, right down to the gods and goddesses. Now that I'm working on Jihad again-this is my third attempt; I had to start over a couple times about 30K in-it's got a complete plan. But of course, this doesn't need to be followed. Sometimes, unexpected things (like the elf) come along.

My Moonfairy stories were all planned out very well. They were based 100% off RPs, the characters, the characters' relationships to one another, quite a few of the places... all based off of RPs. The plots may have differed from my role plays; but the essence remained the same.

As for East Wind Road, and its sequel, these two will be vaguely planned. I know what Robyn will run into. I know what she will see, to some extent. I know that she will need-and get-help from another character who knows the horrors of East Wind Road. I know very little else about the story, and I don't plan on figuring out too much more-that ruins the joy of it for me.

What I WILL do is create character sketches... and I will post them. Posts describing the two most important characters and maybe a few of those she meets that are... East Wind Road inhabitants. Crazy people, in other words.

Do you plan? If so, how much?

I have planned out most of The Savage Princess - I have character sketches up on the blog. I didnt want to, but I keep wussing out of actually writing it just because the story is immense - its more fun to plan it than to actually write it and maybe make a mistake.

But generally, I abhor planning. Theres no point. The story changes, and the plan was useless.

Yeah. I tend to write an outline when I'm editing, so that I have a clear picture of what happens, what is absolutely essential, et cetera.

Ever tried your hand at Nanowrimo?

You're incredible Dianna, absolutely incredible, you must find school quite irksome, but not to be forgotten, your brain is certainly well wired.

I hate school. Especially English classes where they make me outline everything... Or worse, make me read Romeo and Juliet *shudder*

Thanks Katyzzz. You're a good writer yourself. And you can actually make cool looking art.

I'm always fascinated with writing stories and the creation of stories to such a degree that I am working on some myself, fantasy and horror stories are the best and soon I would want to get mine published in as many online places as possible, cafepress, lulu, amazon etc.

Although I do the illustrations for my stories aswell this would be a fascinating topic to create on my fantasy art blog, cheers for the inspiration and some nice writing there!!

Thanks. I love writing fiction. It's just so... free. You can do pretty much anything you like with it.

Wayne,
That could be interesting to read. I can't draw...

Kleo,
The problem with English is that it's too easy. It's set for the lowest common denominator, which apparently isn't me. I just sort of whizz through it and spend the rest of the time yawning.

Except for Romeo and Juliet, which I hate/hated and it hurt to read because it was just. That. Sappy.

Thanks for the comment,
~Dianna
