Planning And An Exercise Again
June 30th 2009 20:48
I've spent much of today jotting down ideas for posts, exercises and series of posts. I have enough ideas for a year; all I need to do is pick one every time I get the chance to post here.
I've also decided to do the Dear Diary exercise again during the month of July. I did this exercise in February and found it great for writing consistently and becoming more familiar with my character in question.
Dear Diary is basically an exercise-every day for a month I write a diary entry of about a thousand words from the perspective of a certain character-the diary covers a straight month of their life. When I did this exercise in February I chose the Goddess Astarael as the focus and a crucial time-part of the first Jihad-in her life as the timeframe.
I enjoyed this exercise because it let me see into her head and let me understand more fully the emotions she went through. When I write the story flows out of me. I came to know her voice, the one she writes with and the one she speaks with. She showed me things about herself that I never would have found out otherwise-and kept me writing every day, even if I didn't make it online to post here.
Here are three of my favourite Diary entries:
Day Really Long Link
Day Really Long Link
Day Really Long Link
This time around I will be writing from the perspective of Alaendril. I will be writing about a month during the first Jihad in which he fought. I'm hoping that this will help me when I later write his actual book-about his experience in the first war and him finally running-with the reality of the war.
I will be writing my first entry tomorrow. You should see it here.

Fictional Worlds
Yes indeed... these are monsters of series that we have here. I don't sketch very much, I do draw maps but I can't draw much else and I don't bother trying.
It was only when I was on the fourth first draft of Jihad (last Nano) that I ended up realizing that this thing is going to be seven books. Or even more than one. It just sort of turned into a monster xD.
I'm hoping that it doesn't take me my entire lifetime for me to get out the entire thing. I mean, I've been working on Jihad since I was eleven. It's one of those stories that has stuck with me and stuck with me and stuck with me.
Though the general idea is shown here, there are quite a lot of surprises. I know that each time I write or rewrite one of these books I will discover something new about my world; that is just in the way that I write. There's always a surprise.
