Picking A Character For Your Dear Diary Project
April 29th 2010 12:36
There are a few things you should think about when deciding which of your characters to do the Dear Diary project for. You'll want it to be a character whose life is interesting, who you plan on spending a fair bit of time with anyways, and who you're somewhat familiar with already.
If you're working on a series of books or short stories, you'll want to work with one of your main characters or one of your main villains. You want to pick a character you're familiar with but who is still somewhat mysterious to you. You also want to pick a character whose day to day life won't bore you to tears. Creative characters might lend themselves more easily to this. You might also consider a character who is important to the world but doesn't take part in any of your main stories.
When you're deciding on a time in your character's life, find an interesting one that isn't part of your planned stories. One thing you might do is start with an uneventful first week to get used to their day to day life, then have a conflict appear in the second or week, have it resolved in the third week, and then in the fourth week have the character moving on.
This time around I'm going to be writing a diary from the Demon's perspective. The Demon is the main villain throughout a good portion of the Jihad books. I'm hoping that through this diary, I will be able to flesh out his character. I really feel like I'm missing something when it comes to him, and I'm looking forward to getting to know him.
Who did you choose and why?

Which character? I have it down to two ... either ...
1) Mason (private detective) who has the wobbliest of tones. I have no idea who he is. Or maybe he is different people when he is with different characters. I don't know ...
2) Elgin (who names their kid Elgin) Valois (a vampire). And also paranthetically, why do many vamps seem to have french or romanian last names? Elgin's voice is less wobbly but there is a back story that would be interesting to find out more about. There was a fall from grace that happened ...
Or ... when May 1 rolls around, I may completely freak out (like I am prone to do) and pick out someone else ... like maybe a Nano character ...
I'm really interested to see what the next month will bring. Thanks for doing this.
Cheers!

Fictional Worlds
Both of your characters sound interesting... and vampires always have French or Romanian last names because everybody knows that that's where the best vampires come from.
I mean, what kind of self respecting vampire comes from a rainy town in America named Forks?
I'm glad that you're looking forward to the Dear Diary workshop
I'm also glad to not be the only one excited for May first
