Pep Talk: Beginning Of Week Two
November 9th 2009 01:45
So now we are at the end of week one and the beginning of week two, and at this point in time you should be at around thirteen thousand words. At this point, if you've managed to follow the pace I suggested, you should be closer to twenty thousand words.
By this point in time you have written more words of fiction than most people do in a lifetime in one week. Just think about that for a minute. You have already done something to be proud of, just by signing up, just for trying to succeed, for even writing ten words you have done something to be proud of this month.
And it may feel like you're writing pure crap at this point, but when you look back on it come January, you probably will find that there are a lot of great moments in there that you never noticed. You'll probably find that there are great scenes that just need a little bit of rewording, that there are passages that flow beautifully, and that there is actually a great story behind your novel.
No matter where you are in your word count, keep pushing yourself to write something every day. Even if it's just one word, one sentence, one paragraph or one page, write something just to prove that you can. It will help you get in the habit of writing regularly, and only through practice can a writer get better.
It is estimated that only after writing one million words is a writer truly great. If you hit fifty thousand words this month-you will be fifty thousand words closer to becoming a truly great writer.
You can all do this if you set your mind to it and make time by cutting certain things out of your day. And if you don't make it-there is always next year.
Thanks for reading and good luck with your novels.
