A Notebook-The Poor Man's Laptop
January 24th 2008 03:36
As a writer, odds are you're going to want to write outside of your home, quite plausibly away from your desktop. And we're not all rich enough for a laptop.
This post is, in essence, the guide to stationary. Starting with notebooks.
When you're looking for a notebook, you're not looking for one with a leather cover, or a fancy type of paper. You're looking for simplicity, so that you're not too awestruck to write in the thing.
What generally works best is a simple black cover and a lined notebook. Me, I tend to go for a little bit of design but not much. You have to find the book that's right for you-some of us have specific qualifications for our notebooks.
Others do not.
The second thing you need is a pen; a pen that may not be expensive, but one that's not uber-repulsive or incredibly uninspiring. Something you'd actually enjoy writing with, ya know?
I'd expand further, but I've got to go. As a final note-look for pen and paper that inspire you, but don't make you scared by their prettiness.

Krystal,
Let's not. There's something about pen and paper that has more romance in it than the computer.

Patricia,
Eeeeep. I couldn't; I have motor control issues, hand cramps, and a typing speed of 90wpm at my best. It's sooo much more advantageous for me to use a computer.

I'm the opposite of you. I'm not the greatest typer. I also feel more connected when I write it out, instead of typing it. ..it flows better for me that way. It's probably because I'm older and am not used to writing that way. I'm the exception rather than the rule, because I'm the only person I know who writes this way.

You're also the only person I know who writes like that.
That's very interesting.

Thanks to my best mate Nes that contaminated me with her dreadful stationary habit. I will get my revenge one day! Wait and see!
But you're right the simplest lined reporter's notebook( top spiral ones) are actually the ones i write the most on for some strange reason!!! They just seem to fit in every bag, the pages are easy to turn, rip and write on as the cover just flips either way...
Typing is indeed fastest but come on, who wants to carry a laptop everywhere they go? In the bus, the tube, the coffee shop, the forest?
Until they make a laptop as tiny, light as a notebook and as performant as my desktop computer i shall carry on and indulge in my stationary freakness....

I love fancy pens and papers and notebooks, I have a leather-bound hand-made-paper book, but you get intimidated to write in them except for collections of your best work and such.
But I adore, and will always adore, my pen and paper; it's simpler. And for some reason, more poetically inspiring to me.

I wonder if it's because I didn't grow-up writing on a keyboard...?
I can (and usually do) write research papers on the keyboard, because I don't have to be as creative. It actually helps me to have a more distant tone, which is why I don't write anything too imaginative on it. Just an idiosynchrocy I have, I guess.
Am I really the only one?
