On Writing: The Core of Poetry
June 29th 2008 22:24
Poetry is all about technique;
It is about rhythm
How words flow onto the page,
How the pen moves,
How it all comes together
To paint a picture...
Poetry is one of the most beautiful forms of writing. It is appreciated by many and there are many great poets who have-sadly-passed on. So many budding poets in this day in age, with dark and beautiful writing, but poetry is such a hard market to get into.
And poetry is not as easy as one may think to write, for most.
A poet chooses their words carefully, generally going for the minimal words needed to make the biggest impact. Sometimes a poem is much much longer but your average poem is no more than fifteen to twenty lines. Poems are written with an eye towards rhythm and grace, and often written to the end of being read aloud.
Most of the great poetry is dark. Many poets wrote during hard times and wrote dark poems, but in poetry perhaps the darkness is most beautiful.
A poem verse:
I love you
Cold words that spill from
Broken hearts-
And bleeding lips.
Note where the lines are split; I could have put the words 'broken hearts' with the line before it, but I preferred the rhythm of taking a breath there. Most poetry is meant, to some extent, to be read aloud. To put images in the reader's mind with fragmented sentences and paragraphs. And in some cases the fragmented style inherent in poetry makes the symbolism that much more beautiful.
Poetry can be tricky to master for some; and for others, it just flows. Whichever category you fall into, good poetry is a pure art form and it is a passion just as any other form of writing.
