The Review:
As a Reader:
As a reader I quite enjoyed this book. The voice is that of a modern day teenager, and it's done well. The story is interesting and it keeps you going from one place to the next. When Marsh is left alone and starts going crazy, you ask the same questions he does: are these things real, or are they just an overactive imagination? When his best friend goes missing, you're brought with him on a hunt that could just kill him and everyone else involved.
The main character is an interesting guy, partially because in a lot of ways, at the beginning of the book, he's still childish. He wants to build rockets and launch them over the summer. He wants to play games.
By the end of this book, the character has grown. The ending satisfies but leaves you curious for more. The characters react to the supernatural in realistic ways-more than once asking themselves if they've gone insane-and it's interesting to watch.
As a reader, I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a supernatural tale. I wasn't terrified by the book, but I was interested in the development of both the supernatural and the natural story.
As a Writer:
As a writer I'm always noticing little things that other people wouldn't-many of which I never used to notice. I read a paragraph and think that I would've worded one of the sentences differently. I read important moments and wonder how they would work if written another way.
As a writer, I was able to enjoy this book and look past the literary choices I felt were mistakes for the story. I think the book was overall pretty well written. No book is perfect.
