Jihad-A Seven Book Series

June 30th 2009 21:03
Those of you who have been with me as readers or as writing friends for a while will know that Jihad has been with me for quite a long time. It started as one book in which the main character is thrown out of our world and into a completely alien one on the brink of war. In essence Jihad is about her mission to end the war.

The Jihad was based off of many Gods very real to the world and the mistakes they had made in the past. There was one war seven hundred years before our main character gets transported. The enemies were 'defeated' but now they are returning.

It has now grown into a huge seven book series. The world building is absolutely astounding, as is the character work that I am doing. Jihad has virtually become its own binder.

Here's an idea of the seven books:

~Storm Rising-The first book in which we see the beginning of the first war: the great alliance, the growing tensions and finally the breaking point. This is the book in which we learn most about Fidolius.

~Alaendril-The story of Alaendril. The first few chapters are about his childhood and the life he left behind; then we are transported to him in the war near the end of his fighting career. We watch him fight and we watch him abandon the fight for the woman he falls in love with.

~Elizabeth-The story of the Queen who put the kingdom back together with the help of the fallen King's brother. (The King during the first Jihad falls of plague towards the end of the war.)

~The Summoner-Summoners are an ancient sect of Fidolius which died out long before even the first Jihad. This is the story of one of them.

~Elvish Rising-The story of the First Elvish King, the man who united the Elves and brought them under one government of sorts.

~Jihad-The original story mentioned above; however it doesn't finish in one novel anymore.

~Dawn-In which the Enemy is defeated for once and for all.

And I'll probably write up a reference book just because I can with all the background work I'm doing.

My series is 7 books too!

Well, actually, I havnt decided on book 7. I know there are definitely 6, but if I go for 7 everyone will have to die and I dont know if Im ready for that.

Mine also crosses over our world and another world.

I DO have a refrence book - its essential, especially if you're a sketcher, like me, so you can get a visual idea of everything. I feel for you - Ive been working on this since I was 14. Im now 27.

I feel for you, because creating a world is HARD. After I drew some maps it really started coming together, but Im on my third first draft, (I know you will get what I mean there) and Im only just starting to become happy with it. Maybe I'll start the final first draft soon....

I have world history, family trees for all my major races and stories on them so that I know exactly where my current characters came from. Its so much work.

One thing made me feel better - it took Tollkien his whole life to get Lord of The Rings out. So, you cant rush a work of this size, I figure.

I love reading about your idea. Its a great one. I've got some 'Savage' up in my 'The Writing' category but Im always sketchy on the details. I want people to be surprised when I finally finish it!

I can completely relate to the pain of knowing everything that will happen for a whole seven (or even more, with spin offs and history) books, and yet still having to deal with the dirty details of book one. Its massive.

Kleo,

Yes indeed... these are monsters of series that we have here. I don't sketch very much, I do draw maps but I can't draw much else and I don't bother trying.

It was only when I was on the fourth first draft of Jihad (last Nano) that I ended up realizing that this thing is going to be seven books. Or even more than one. It just sort of turned into a monster xD.

I'm hoping that it doesn't take me my entire lifetime for me to get out the entire thing. I mean, I've been working on Jihad since I was eleven. It's one of those stories that has stuck with me and stuck with me and stuck with me.

Though the general idea is shown here, there are quite a lot of surprises. I know that each time I write or rewrite one of these books I will discover something new about my world; that is just in the way that I write. There's always a surprise.
