I know

This wasn't meant to be.

I could be the one for you
To hold you through
The darkest times;
But in a way I am.

I will help you
But I know
That when you are
Where you need to be
I will no longer be
Who you need.

I wish
That I could hold you in my arms
Until the day I die
Be with you
Each day and each night;

I wish
That we could be
But I know
We were never meant to last.

I wish
Loving you
Didn't have to hurt so much.

I loved this, even though it was quite sad. But I guess love that isn't meant to be is always going to be something of a depressing subject.

Yes indeed. Besides which, I have a problem writing happy poetry; it doesn't work out nearly as well. All of my best work has some sadness to it.
