Hectic Holidays!
December 28th 2009 12:37
Sorry that I haven't posted in a long time... I've had barely a waking moment to myself for the last week. I've done absolutely no writing, less planning, and even less of the schoolwork that I need to get done over the holidays. I may be on my Christmas break but it doesn't feel very much like a break.
I'm at the point where I'm panicing because I've only really got two days left of my break to do whatever I want with. I really need to outline some writing goals for next year, need to get my butt back in gear in both my writing and in my school work, and I need more time. I can't believe that one of two weeks of my break has already gone by.
Time management is one of the most difficult challenges that writers face. Most of us don't make a living off of our writing, and spend 6 hours a day at work or school, and then we want to make time to be social and to see our friends, and on top of that we have to make time to write. Some of us have little children around or older parents who need to be taken care of.
Writers aren't always the most organized people. A lot of us have certain areas of our life in which we seem to be totally and utterly messy and disorganized, and other areas where we are rather OCD.
A lot of writers are shy, and so socializing isn't necessarily something that takes up a big chunk of their life, but I'm not a shy person. I have a lot of friends and keeping up with them takes out huge amounts of my time. It's bad for my writing-but I love those people, and I really do find it important to keep in touch with them, to see them, to spend time with them.
I have no real answers. I'm not good at following a schedule. I have a really hard time organizing things completely. I meant to get a lot of work done during my time off of school-and it hasn't really happened. I'm really, really bad with time management. It's one of the things that I'm worst at.
So I'm officially making one of my goals for next year to become better at time management. This means less spontaneous adventures with my friends (as much fun as they are), less time spent roaming the interwebs, and more time forcing myself to sit down and get some work done. I'm not going to say I want to write an hour every day, or write X number of words and pages, because I'm not the kind of girl that can do that every single day. My life is too hectic. But I do want to spend more time writing than I have been.
Part of my plan to spend more time working on my books and to have more free time involves cutting my expectations back to six posts a week. This means I will not be posting on Sundays. I will be accepting guest posts for those days. Contact me if you're interested in working with me on my blog.
You can read a thousand blog posts, articles, and even books about time management, but the only true way to find a time management scheme that works for you is to experiment. And that is what I plan to do during the new year. Wish me luck.
Happy holidays to all, I hope you're getting more work done than I have been.
