Five Rants To Read This Week
September 21st 2009 12:21
I missed the last couple days of recommended reading, so here's some recommended reading that should keep you entertained for hours:
~Gender Equal Societies A rant about making your fantasy society TRULY gender equal. I really want to print this one out and put it in the front of my binder, but I just used up all my printer paper. Lame. This rant talks about what's wrong with a lot of 'gender equal' societies in fantasy and asks you to face your own beliefs about gender before you start writing a gender equal society.
~Class/Caste Systems A rant about having a class/caste system for your culture/country. Bookmark it. Print it out and put it in your binder. Reread it every time you start building a new culture or world, and your worlds will be a hundred times better for it.
~Having Different Sexual Practices In Your World A rant about different sexual practices. This rant is short and sweet, with a few useful things to keep in mind if the sexual norms in your world are different from those in ours. It brings up some very good points to consider even if sexual differences don't take a big part in your story.
~On Using Non-Western Influence In Fantasy this talks about using different cultures as a basis for your world. While my worlds have a strong Western influence I try to include minor non-Western influences as well, mainly a little bit of Japanese influence.
~Rant On Non-Standard Fantasy Societies a rant on creating fantasy societies different from the norm. Different from societies in our own world and in common fantasy worlds.
A lot of these are really, really good, to be bookmarked and/or printed out and put in your binder. Limyaael is a writer who has deeply studied writing and who reads a lot of different fantasy. I like her writing style and her sarcastic voice. She has a lot of background knowledge in various elements of worldbuilding and there is quite a bit of useful information in these rants.
Enjoy.
