Fanfiction: Good, Bad, Or Indifferent?
July 15th 2008 04:21
Fanfiction. That which writers of varying quality from all over the web write. That
which all professional writers have extremely varying opinions on. Nobody can deny its existence; it's practically everywhere. And there is fanfic for almost everything.
My personal take on fanfic is that it is a great writing exercise. I enjoy writing fanfic for fun. I also enjoy reading it. The good stuff. The one problem I've always had with fanfic is that a lot of it is utter crap.
A lot of fanfic writers can barely spell, use improper grammar, et cetera. This is probably why I never experimented much beyond the realm of Literate Harry Potter fanfiction. Somebody actually found me a site with that on it. You have to submit your fanfic and they check it for anything extremely OOC, quality, and spelling and grammar.
Which made it quite tolerable to read. And a lot of it was really good stuff.
As for if there were fanfic of my own work... I think my opinion would depend on just how popular my writing was. Because the more popular it is, the more likely it is to be butchered by a bunch of illiterates.
On one hand I would love to know that I am appreciated enough that somebody out there is writing fanfiction about me. On the other hand I think I would cry if it was horribly written. So I have to say that I love well written fic, even of my own work.
And I would read it.
