Editing Update 30/08/07

I did read through the first 10 chapters and revise them a bit. I suck at beginnings.
At least I admit it.
Anyway, did anyone ever tell you formatting is mind-numbing work? If you want to fall asleep, format a novel... that's what I've been doing for the last hour...

Once you get warmed up (or finish even) go back to the beginning, and if you have to? Chuck it out. It's served its purpose.
If it's okay, rework it until it matches the rest of the manuscript, but don't be afraid to chuck it out completely and make chapter 2 the beginning or start it half way through chapter 1.
The best stories start just before something crucial happens or at the point something crucial happens. When you're formulating a story, you're working your way towards that on the page or screen.
My writing gets better the longer I stick at a single project. Then, I go back to the beginning and start again, and do it again and again and again, until the body of work has the same consistency as the best parts. Apart from a certain frustration at the time consuming nature of this process, I enjoy it. That's what writing is all about to me.

Fictional Worlds
I've been over the beginning over a million times; I still love the scene itself, the timing. It's just the writing that people don't like, certain details. Certain bits I forgot or threw in too early. Stuff like that.
The timing is when it *has* to start.
