Dear Diary 6

July 7th 2009 18:21
Dear Diary,
Last night we fought our way through to the border; because they were sleeping we did not fight near as hard as we would have by day. Only half the men woke in time to fight us, and many of them simply fell back as the others died. We were going back to our border. And they are tired, they have fought as long and as hard as we have.

We made it to the border at long last, and our men were awake to greet us. Specifically one man I had not seen before, but who I recognized instantly. He beckoned for me to come and I nodded, gesturing to Shalorin to set up camp. And now I must show you how this first meeting went.

“Welcome back, Alaendril,” he said. He was a tall man with brown hair, on one of Loki's Shadowmares, the fastest horses ever created. Magical horses that could simply run through the trees; and turn their riders into mist while they ran.

“Why am I suddenly special enough for your welcome, my lord?”

“You do not see it yet, but you have a very special role to play not just in this war but throughout centuries to come. You are a very special person, Alaendril. No matter that you do not see it; men and Elves rarely do. Even the other Gods do not know how you differ from other Elves-they cannot see as far as I can, and I cannot warn them for it is not my place.”

“But why are you here? If you cannot tell the other Gods surely you cannot tell me what my place is, or will be in the centuries to come.” This was all new to me; all strange to me. Why had Loki sought me out this day?

“I have come to bring you a present.”

“A... Present?”

A present from a God? I mean, I knew they called me the future King back at home, and that someday I might inherit the magical sword of kings. But to get a gift from a God? This was no ordinary honour of the Elves. There were stories, usually of Bannon or Rasie. Loki did not tend to favour the Elves, as we have been too honest for him. In the end Loki is a trickster, yes, but he pulled through for the other Gods in this war like we would never have expected.

He whistled and a beautiful Shadowmare walked into the clearing. Shadowmares are black, and when they run they turn into a black misty form. Their eyes are silver, their bodies black sometimes with silver stars. And this one was the most beautiful horse I had ever laid my eyes upon; she had big silver eyes with blue centers and her back was covered in little silver stars. There were saddlebags on her, and I could tell that one held a sword.

“This horse is yours; her name is Starlight. Midnight should be passed on-to the girl you have brought back here. Introduce yourself.”

I dismounted Midnight and walked to this beautiful horse, my eyes focused on her beauty. I stroked her gently and she nuzzled my arm. This was my horse; in an instant we had bonded. Midnight neighed slightly, knowing it was time for her to leave my company. A sad parting... but it needed to happen now. Loki had brought me this horse for a reason.

“Pull out the sword.”

I pulled it out and gaped. It was made of Elvish steel, of course, the blade looking more like diamond than any metal. It was forged with powerful magic, the shape of a scimitar. The hilt was made of Bannonite and in it rested three jewels. One was black and shaped like an eye-a symbol of Loki. One was a sapphire, shaped like a moon, of Rasie. The last was green, shaped like a star, of Raychel; this was a very special sword. Almost as magical as the Sword of Kings. I could feel the magic radiating off of it.

“Never lose this sword,” he warned, “for you do not know its importance now but in centuries to come it will be more important than even the Sword of Kings. There will come a day when you will have to pass this sword on-you will know when the time comes.”

I took a deep bow, astonished. This was like nothing I had ever heard of; no story, no myth, nothing could have prepared me for this meeting with Loki. He was not the God most known for visiting Elves, or soldiers of any sort. He usually stayed off of the world itself, up in Phoenix. It was the Triad who usually visited various mortals.

“Thank you, my lord, for this honour.”

“Don't thank me; when the time comes, it is I who will be thanking you.”

And with that he vanished, leaving me there with the new horse and the sword. I put the sword back in its sheath on Starlight and led the horses back to the main camp.

I went back to the others and gave Shalorin my old sword-I would have no need for it now, and it was better than his own. I gave the girl the horse and then retreated into my tent which they had set up for me, in shock. Shalorin was taking care of Starlight. I needed to sit down and prepare myself some tea.

Shalorin came to visit me in my tent, and though I did not tell him all that Loki had said to me, I showed him the new sword. It confuses me. Why would Loki pick me out of the crowd? What could I do that was so important? If I became King, I would take up the Sword of Kings; it was simply part of taking the throne. So clearly I had another purpose in my life.

It is afternoon now, and I have spent all morning contemplating this, getting to know Starlight and getting used to the difference in the weight of the sword. Sadly I must return to my more important duties now; there is an important meeting among the leaders of the various platoons and it is all the way across the camp. More later.

Kleo,

I do suspect Starlight will come to play a very important role.. don't know for sure.

Shadowmares are special horses created by Loki for his most loyal servants. When they go into a full gallop, they become like Kitty Pride in the X-Men-they can gallop through trees and walls and just about anything, as can whatever is attached to them, including saddlebags and their riders.

If there are any Shadow Stallions-I'm not sure, I don't think there are, I mean, they're born from magic-they're most likely kept in the city of the Gods 'cause they're probably pretty rare. Trying to figure that part out but Loki's being secretive.
