Day Two: Questions About Tone
January 20th 2010 12:11
Today you're going to finish reading your manuscript if you haven't done so already, summarize your novel in no more than 200 words, and answer the following questions:
~What is the main theme of your novel? What is it's message/what do you want to accomplish by telling this story?
~What is the secondary theme?
~Who is your main character and why?
~Is your character's voice distinctive? What can you do to get more in touch with your character's inner mental process and thus their voice?
~Could the story be better told from a different point of view?
~Is there a character-or more than one-you think you need to spend more time on in the next draft?
~Who is/who are these people and why would you like to spend more time with them?
Spend some time thinking about your story. What have you accomplished, both in terms of your stylistic choices/the quality of your prose, and in terms of what you've learned about your characters and your world during this time? Tomorrow there will be a few more questions.
