Continuing along, plodding as slowly as I am, I am now on the seventh excersize in 31 Days To A Better Blog. The ones that have been going on behind the scenes have been reading exercises and I've found some great reading along the way. I'm happy with the way this is going so far.

So I'm going to link to five great blogs for writers, and tell you exactly why they are great blogs for writers. They aren't in any particular order of awesomeness, it's just in the order I thought of them.

1. Writer's Notes by Jeanne Dininni is a great blog for writers full of resources, articles, and even a few author interviews. It isn't updated as regularly as some but the archives are great. It's my own personal favourite writing blog-other than this one of course-on Orble.

I also must say that Jeanne has been great to me since I started my own blog. She has been one of the bloggers here that has, to an extent, mentored me. She commented on the right posts at the right times, just when I was starting to get frustrated that not enough people comment around here.

2. Pubrants by Kristin Nelson, a self-described very nice literary agent. It's her polite ranting about the publishing industry. Not only, from what I can see, does it show that she's a great agent for anyone who writes in one of her many genres, but it gives an insider's point of view in the world of publication.

I've been reading Pubrants for years now and it has never failed to impress me or to make me smile. Kristin has a great sense of humour and is incredibly honest. Her advice is useful, to be sure, and she writes well.

Note: this is a really great recent post Writing As Business Part 2 I'm too lazy at the moment to dig up part one though.

3. The Muffin this blog is specifically for anything related to female writers. It includes interviews with female writers, articles, random updates, and a variety of useful info. It's also attached to a great Ezine, Women On Writing or WoW where you can find a variety of articles by various writers including Hope Clark, the woman who runs Funds For Writers.

4. Freelancing&Fiction this blog has recently moved onto a domain from blogspot, which is excellent. It's full of resources and articles for the freelance writer. The woman who writes it, Michy, also runs an excellent forum for writers which you can find linked to on the blog.

I've only been reading this one for a short period of time but I quite like it, and the new site and layout are amazing. Love!

5. Skelliewag A great blog which I discovered yesterday thanks to this 31 Days exercise. It's mostly for freelancers and bloggers and is full of useful information about building a successful blog and freelance career. I will be doing more wandering and likely come up with a more comprehensive review of this blog sometime next week.

Harry Potter Review: Part One

August 10th 2009 17:47
Just thought I would let you guys know that I decided to do the first part of my Harry Potter review lens before leaving for the cottage. I've also decided not to do any best-of posts, seeing as how I worked my butt off yesterday making a best-of lens. I spent two or three hours working on the darn thing, so I figure I'm going to just leave that as it is and not to a best-of at this moment in time.

Here's the link to the Harry Potter review lens:

Harry Potter Review

So far I've got a review of the first book, the first movie and a comparison between the two. I'll be doing book two when I return.

Thanks for reading.

Book Review: The Screwtape Letters

August 6th 2009 15:41
The Screwtape Letters is a book written by C.S. Lewis during world war two. It is a series of letters written from one more experienced 'devil' to his nephew, trying to help him corrupt a human.

This book is quite interesting. Some time ago I tried to read it but couldn't get into it. I don't remember why, quite possibly because I got distracted. I started reading it again a couple of weeks ago and found it quite interesting. I finished it last night before falling asleep.

The main character, the letter writer known as Screwtape, is a manipulative demon. He knows quite well the art of playing with the minds of men, and he tries to explain this to Wormwood, to help him bring a soul into the world of Hell. It is quite an interesting perspective, the letters are quite well written and they tell one hell of a story.

All in all this is a great book. It's very Christian, but I managed not to choke on it because it is written from the point of view of a devil; therefore, while it is really all about resisting sin-and CS Lewis was a very Christian man-I can still stand it. The Chronicles Of Narnia, the other books I know by CS Lewis, are also very Christian but are disguised as fiction and, having never read the bible and knowing very little of Christian myth (I like to keep it that way), I can bear those as well.

The Screwtape Letters is an excellent book, written in a quite interesting style and looking at the moral issues of humanity without shoving moral lessons down one's throat.

You can buy it here: The Screwtape Letters On Amazon

New Project: A Cutter's Journey

July 31st 2009 09:26
Really Long Link

That's the website for my newest project, A Cutter's Journey. I'll be starting that on Monday. It's going to be my personal story of cutting as well as several inspiring quotes collected by a number of cutters. It's also going to include statistics to do with cutting, facts about cutting, suicide and depression, and the back will have a long list of links

Hi Everyone

July 29th 2009 16:01
Note: I've decided to do one last Dear Diary. This way it will be somewhat more wrapped up and not just end; I'll be tying down a couple loose threads and making it feel more like an ending.

I had a good night last night; went out and partied with friends on the beach. Saw some people screwed up on drugs-they're always funny-and some beautiful water. Got to watch the sun set, this time, on the beach

Dear Diary 1

July 1st 2009 15:12
Dear Diary,
Though they hail me a great warrior I grow sick of this fight; we all hav our beliefs, why can't we just accept it? Fidolius and Appollinia can never fully be one. Not after the scars that tore the countries apart centuries ago. And we Elves would never submit to a human ruler, nor to be made to worship Fidolian Gods.

Working

January 25th 2009 08:03
Writing isn't always easy. The words sometimes come only with force. Sometimes we get bogged down trying to create our worlds. We get fed up when we find out that somebody's already had the same idea. We get depressed, bored, fed up, angry with all the world and with our muses.

We get angry because everything we're writing sounds like crap. We get angry because we feel we aren't getting anywhere

Learning

January 17th 2009 03:52
Writing is in large part a learning process. A writer needs to be open to new things; this is why we have classes and workshops and books about writing. Not all things will work for you, this is true. We're all different. You probably won't find a class that's absolutely perfect for you. A method won't always work.

But if you don't try new things, how can you possibly know? Everything changes; our writing should too. Let's take the example of a well known author, JK Rowling of the Harry Potter series

Writers Read

December 24th 2008 13:01
Part of becoming a better writer is reading; not just books about writing, though those are good, but books in your genre, outside your genre, nonfiction, everything and anything. They can show you how to put a book together; how to write back cover copy; how to weave stories. Nonfiction can teach you, can generate ideas, et cetera.

For those of us who are broke (like myself), or who want to read books under public domain but not buy them for whatever reason, this is a great resource to help you read

November's over-And now?

December 3rd 2008 13:23
Here are some links to various sites by and for writers-specifically those of us who have participated in Nanowrimo. Some of these are blogs/other sites by Nanos who have been a great support to me, some of them are designed to keep Nanos going throughout the year. So here goes:

The first link is a page on the Nanowrimo site itself-the 'I wrote a novel, now what?' page that they put up every year in the first week of December is now live

Help Zette!

November 5th 2008 20:09
This is an update on the little fundraiser we have going on for Zette. (Who, by the way, is a Nanowriter; you can find her free Nano-advice novel in eBook format on the Reaching 50,000! forum. It's a wonderful little book.)

Writing To Raise Awareness

October 28th 2008 09:54
For the last couple of days, I've been thinking of awareness. Specifically to do with depression and self harm. I want to reveal to people what they don't see, what they don't realize unless they care enough to really look.

I want to show the world exactly why people like me do what we do, and what better way than to do that through writing

Help Zette!

October 28th 2008 07:17
Zette is the owner of the writing website Forward Motion. She's a great person and a good writer; having talked to her on the Nanowrimo site, and looked into her free Nano-centric book, I feel I can attest to this.

Well, she insists on keeping FM free, which is admirable, and handling all the costs herself. Meanwhile, her house is falling apart. So the writer Holly Lisle (who ran FM before, and who I've mentioned before) has started a fundraiser of sorts for her, to be found if you click on the button below

Fundraisers For Nano

October 25th 2008 17:25
Anyone who's been a long-term reader of this blog is already well aware of my goal for this November, but I'm going to go over that along with a few ways to raise money (without spending any) for Nano.

My thing: This year I'm planning on writing 250, 000 words during the month of November. I will blog at least twice a week, even if only with progress updates. If I achieve this goal, I want a few people to donate to Nanowrimo in my name, because I can't-similar to sponsorship. My goal is to raise at least $25.00, one dollar for every ten thousand words

Only Writers Can Understand Writers...

October 25th 2008 16:57
I have many, many different circles in which I travel. About seven different groups in which I hang out on a regular basis, and even more who I talk to online. And I have to say, my favourites are my writer friends.

Why? Because if I tell them I can't make it to something because I'm too busy writing, they understand. When I talk about my binder full of notes on different stories and worlds, they understand. When I talk about my love for words, they get it

Habit Forming

October 18th 2008 20:15
I was surfing the Nano forums today, like I do every day (every few hours, actually... ahem... I am not obsessed), and I was reading a thread on how you get yourself to write. Everyone was giving their advice and what works for them, and someone mentioned that they're working really hard on forming the habit of writing every day.

And that made me realize something. I am actually in the habit of writing every day, or at least almost every day. Why is that? It's all thanks to this blog

Take Pride In Your Work (Prompt)

October 4th 2008 23:41
I'm not really sure why I'm writing this. I just felt like... like it had to come out. As a writer, you need to be aware of your faults; you need to look carefully at your work and check every little detail. You need to scan it, proof it, edit it, and sometimes it feels like chopping something you love into pieces and sewing it back up with body parts you don't recognize.

But when you make something good, when you have gone through all of that, it means even more so that you deserve to be proud of it. I know I have some pretty awful entries in here, and a number of mediocre ones; but there are also a few that stand out, that are beautiful. And I am proud of my overall body of work that is this blog

When Everything Is Just Too Much

October 4th 2008 23:28
So let me tell you something. School is stressing me out; I'm trying to force myself to go but it isn't working very well. Things at home aren't pleasant either. I'm stressed; so stressed that I've been sick on and off for two weeks now. Nanowrimo is on the horizon.

It's times like these when anybody-writer or otherwise-starts to wonder about all their obligations and if they're worth it. It's times like these when normally I would abandon the blog for weeks at a time; I'm trying not to. It's sort of working. It's times like these when we just want to throw in the towel

The Writer's Darkness

September 16th 2008 22:03
The part of us that makes us writers is said to make depression more common. Personally I think depression is common everywhere, but more so among writers-especially young writers. Suicide is the third leading cause of death of young people.

I know I have faced the darkness numerous times, and somehow pulled through. I know it isn't easy, and it will never be easy, and I expect the darkness to haunt me until the end of time. This is a burden I will bear for now, until one day it destroys me. And I know that it probably will; I can see that happening. But I'll keep it at bay for now
