What Counts as Writing Time?

August 9th 2010 12:59
When creating and following a writing schedule, you must also decide what to include in your writing time. This will vary greatly depending on the kinds of writing that you do. For a writer of non-fiction or even historical novels, research is so essential to writing that it takes up writing time. For a high fantasy writer, worldbuilding is essential so it takes up writing time. For a blogger, sometimes even things like email are part of 'writing time'.

I have two different kinds of writing time: fiction writing time and blogging time. My fiction writing time is divided into worldbuilding, plot building, editing, and writing various short stories and novels. Blogging time is divided into writing posts, responding to comments, preparing workshops, and brainstorming. I've also started setting aside time for my other website and its blog.

For the next week, track the things you ordinarily do during your writing time. Decide which ones are unnecessary distractions-talking on MSN or Facebook, checking non writing related emails, reading books that aren't for research of some kind-and which ones are essential to your work-writing a chapter of your novel, filling in important background for your world or characters, or proof reading your final draft.

Try to find another time to do things like socialize online, play computer games, and read for enjoyment. Then take all the important things like research, worldbuilding, writing, and editing, and give them each a time slot. You can organize your time in hours or in days. If you have a lot of hours to spend on your writing, you can spend an hour a day on each important aspect of your writing, or work on several different stories. If you only have one hour each day, then you might work on writing a story one day and editing the next and so on.

Because my schedule is so fluid-just a goal of writing for one hour every day-I've decided not to schedule my days either. I have however decided that I would like to spend two hours a week working on my blogs and three hours a week working on my fiction. Since it takes half an hour for me to write the average blog post, my goal is to consistently write two posts a week on each of my blog for the next six weeks. I do hope to eventually increase the amount of time I spend writing, but I'm starting small and working my way to the top.

Write down your schedule somewhere where you will see it every day, and give yourself a check mark-and a pat on the back-every time you follow your schedule for a day.

Prompt Of The Week

July 20th 2010 12:25
Today's prompt is:

Write 500 words about falling in love

My Response:

Love is something we all dream about. Everybody's looking for love. Everybody wants somebody to hold them for the rest of their life. Songs, poems, entire books have been written about falling in love, and even more have been written about falling out of love. Love can bring great happiness or great pain, great gain or great loss. Love can bring about joy and prosperity or it can bring about-in the wrong people-destruction and even war. Love is perhaps the greatest driving force on this planet other than the planet itself. And love is the biggest four letter word in the language.

We chase after love day after day. As children we seek plutonic love and the love of our parents; as teenagers and adults we seek the love with whom we will have our children. We torture ourselves looking for love. We base our worth on whether or not somebody else can love us-how screwed is that? And if nobody does love us the way we want to be loved, we think we're worthless or monstrous or any number of things. We convince ourselves that we're bad people or that we're ugly when really we're not. Women settle for men who beat them every day because they're convinced they deserve it, that they can't do better. Men settle for women who annoy them to no end for much the same reasons.

We are worth something even if nobody is in love with us, even if we cannot find love of the kind we're seeking. We are worth something so long as we try to be worth something, so long as we work towards creating a better future for us and our loved ones. Just because nobody loves you doesn't mean you aren't beautiful; maybe it just means that men are fools.

And sometimes, you know, love isn't enough for us to realize our worth. Even though somebody loves us, even though somebody wants to be with us, we still think that we're ugly, we still think that we're worthless. But if somebody else can delight in our body, if somebody else can adore our body, why can't we love it too? If we can love somebody's body, if we can adore somebody else's body, why can't we love our own? Do you just assume there's something wrong with the person who enjoys your body? Maybe that's a mistake.

If a thousand men tell you you're beautiful, a hundred of them are desparate and just want to get laid-but it's the other nine hundred who at least kind of mean it who you should be listening to. And if nobody tells you you're beautiful, than maybe the world is blind; most of us are beautiful, just some of us have beauty hidden on the inside.

Next time you're sad because you aren't in love, remember that there's somebody for everybody, but you have to become who you want to be before you can find somebody that wants to be with that person.

Your turn.

A Couple Blogs

July 9th 2010 12:44
Today I don't have much for you, just two blogs and some news about my personal life.

I'll start with the links so if you don't care you can ignore my personal b****hfest.

~Stepping Into Fantasy is a blog written by Emily White full of interesting thoughts on the craft. I really enjoy the personality that comes through in the reading, and not only are the posts interesting, but she has a loyal community and the conversations in the comments can be just as interesting.

~Writing Is Cake is a multi author blog full of interesting thoughts and reviews of DVDs and books. I'm only just now looking through their archives, stumbling upon interesting tidbits. Join me in the journey of discovery...

And on to the personal stuff:

I still don't have a family doctor, and I have absolutely no clue where to start looking. I could ask my family-that's the first recommended step-but I don't really want to deal with any of their doctors. I know there's a confidentiality thing and they can't say anything I don't want them to, but I don't trust doctors, and I don't want any boundaries that will make it harder to trust whatever doctor I find.

I've looked online but haven't gotten too far. I've got a list of doctors to call and I should start making calls tomorrow.

My wrist is aching and the writing is slow, but I've got all summer and I'm sure soon things will be back to normal.

Prompt Of The Week

July 7th 2010 12:57
Sorry that today's prompt is a day late. Today's prompt comes from something that happened to me earlier this week. First I'll give you the prompt and then the backstory:

5 Great Blog Posts

June 25th 2010 11:16
I mentioned earlier this week that due to my wrist, I won't be posting as much here. However, though I will be focusing my writing on other things, and I will be writing less, I'll be reading more than ever. This week I've read some amazing blog posts that I would like to share with you:

~Dear Muse: is a correspondence between author and muse in which the muse is fired. The muse then comes back with a letter asking why the writer doesn't look at their own actions

My Summer Writing Goals...

June 23rd 2010 12:05
Summer has, for most students at least in the GTA, officially begun. My school ended on Monday and now I lie in wait for marks... but what will I be writing this summer? I've got big plans for Fictional Worlds and for my website and I'm hoping that summer will give me the time I need to put a lot of these plans into motion.

What's coming up in my writing life

The Writing Olympics

June 22nd 2010 12:19
I've only just discovered the 2010 Writing Olympics over at YoungWritersOnline.net, which has just begun. I won't be participating but it sounds like a fantastic set of writing challenges. Follow the links to find out more:

Freedom is Painful

June 21st 2010 12:31
Well I finished school on Friday... all of my assignments have been completed and now I get to sit and wait for marks.

What else happened on Friday? I woke up in lots of pain. Where was the pain? If you guessed wrist, you're close-my entire hand seized up, and it's been hurting ever since. Tomorrow I'm going to look into the matter of getting myself a proper family doctor with the hopes that I can be sent to a specialist before July is over. It's no longer just painful, it's become almost crippling

Creating a Fictional Blog

June 4th 2010 12:59
A fictional blog and a blog about fiction are far from being the same thing. This blog is a blog about fiction; a fictional blog is written from the point of view of one character and is essentially that character's blog. Depending on the context of your character's life, you may or may not allow comments. Comments should be responded to in character. It's a great way to get some publicity for your writing and your character.

What does this have to do with your Dear Diary project? Well, given a little bit of editing, your Dear Diary might make an excellent beginning for a fictional blog. It may have its own story arc, but that doesn't mean you can't add more to it as you go along

There are a thousand and one things you can do after having written a Dear Diary Project. One of these is to examine your Dear Diary project closely, looking for ideas that can be turned into short stories.

For example, you might have discovered a crucial fact about your character but not have explored it fully. Now is the time to take that crucial fact and ask who, what, where, when, why, and how. You might discover an abusive relationship in their past, a friend's death, or even a beautiful moment that kept them going when times were dark. Explore those things and follow them to their natural conclusions; you might just find a great story arc

What can you do with your Dear Diary project? Well, before looking at what can be done with the Dear Diary project itself, let's take a look at what can be done with all the information you got from your project.

Those of you who have been reading Fictional Worlds for a while may be familiar with my Expanded Character Profiles. In fact, you may have even filled a good chunk of one out for your Dear Diary character. You may have been missing large portions of this profile before. Now is your chance to fill out the entire profile

What Comes Next?

June 1st 2010 12:30
Now that the Dear Diary workshop is over, you may be wondering what to do with your diary and with the time you were previously spending writing your diary. There are several options on where you go from here-you could continue your Dear Diary project, start a new one, start a journal for yourself, or any number of other things.

Here on Fictional Worlds I would like to walk you through some next steps-applying what you've learned about your character to your novel, using the diary to write new stories about your character, possibly even editing the diary or turning it into a novella. Over the next week or so, I'm going to show you what your options are from here

The End of Dear Diary

May 31st 2010 16:43
Today is both the last day of May and the last day of the Dear Diary workshop. Now you have to decide how to end your Dear Diary project. Do you want your character to get sick of writing a diary, or do you want them to have filled their notebook? Do you want their diary to end because a certain trauma has ended, or do you want it to continue, even if you aren't writing it? More importantly, do you want to continue it to a logical ending point in its story, or is it ready to be put down?

How you end your Dear Diary project is as dependent on your character as it is on you. Maybe your character has been writing journals for years, and ends each one in a specific way. Maybe your character isn't ready to stop writing yet. Maybe your character wanted it to be over and done with last week and is glad to see it over

Burning the Candle at Both Ends

May 26th 2010 12:19

I've been burning the candle at both ends trying to write, party, chill with my friends, and go to school and get homework done. This is why I didn't post yesterday, and why this post has very little substance

It's Holiday Time

fireworks

Today is Victoria Day here in Canada, which doesn't celebrate my grandmother (which is really too bad; she needs a holiday) but celebrates the Sovereign's Birthday, and recognizes the greatness of Queen Victoria. Now, I'm not usually one to really care for or pay attention to royalty, but I'm not complaining about a day off school

I've been running around all over the place lately, and it's been hard to do much of anything around here or on my personal website. I have found you a couple links about dear diaries to consider, and at the end of this post I will announce the winner of the D. J. MacHale books.

~How to Sleep Better Using a Dream Diary is an interesting article about keeping a Dream Diary. I don't know if it really does help with the sleeping-but it's probably worth a shot

The Place of Dreams in a Diary

May 20th 2010 12:46
Dreams are one of the most widely spread and least understood experiences of humanity. We all have them, though some of us don't remember them. Almost none of us understand them. They're a mystery of life.

Your character probably dreams too, unless he or she is an android. And they probably remember their dreams once in a while. A diary is a safe place to think on paper about those dreams. A place where no one will judge your character for their crazy dreams, and nobody can make fun of what they dream about, no matter how ridiculous it seems

The Darkness

May 19th 2010 12:29
It is dark here, and it is cold. I know I am alone. And I am weak. There seems to be nothing here but me. Every once in a while I’ll hear a voice, but I think it's just me going crazy. I've been locked up here long enough for that.

The Council met me in a great clearing, where neither humans nor elves could find us and disturb us, and it is there where I made my last stand. First I asked them if they would agree to peace with me; I told them my people were slaughtered, and I must give up the fight to help them struggle through this time. Loki laughed and asked me if I thought them fools to believe such things; I had no answer for him

Short Writing Exercise

May 18th 2010 12:43
We are now halfway through the month, and thus halfway through our Dear Diary projects. While I have personally fallen behind, I'm hoping that most of you have succeeded in writing every day.

Today, I'd like to distract you from your Dear Diary project to do an unrelated writing exercise

A Couple Links

May 14th 2010 12:26
It's been a long, exhausting week. A lot of friends are going through a lot of stress, and between helping them out and trying to attend school, I've had very little time to do much of anything over the last few days. I've-barely-managed to find a couple of interesting articles for you to read over the weekend.

~Creative Journaling Topic Ideas is an article on Suite101 with different ideas for journal entries. If you're looking for inspiration for your introspective Dear Diary this week, you can find plenty of interesting thoughts here
