A Lot Of Work
August 9th 2008 01:24
Worldbuilding, despite all the fun it can be, can be hard work. And a lot of work, depending on the level of worldbuilding you're going for. It all depends on how much worldbuilding you're doing and when your deadlines are.
Right now, I'm building a history, a culture, a language, about a dozen maps, mythology, another culture, and more mythology. I've been working on it a fair bit. And it can be frustrating at times, but mostly it's not too hard. The hardest part was getting down the Elvish history. It just wouldn't come to me until a Historian character came into the picture. Well, historian is wrong; scholar would be better.
It's long work. It's hard work. But it's well worth it, because I know that this world is going to produce more than one book. And that it'll produce good ones, good stories, good characters, and good just about everything.
I went out of town for a couple days, which is why I haven't posted. Or been online anywhere at all. And yesterday I read a Really Really good book (more on that later.)
I wrote maybe ten pages of worldbuilding. I'm proud of that. I came back relaxed-or close enough, anyway-and I came back with a fair bit of work done. The work that needs to be done, as this world must be completely built by November. But I'm glad to be working on it.
And I think all the best fantasy writers enjoy the worldbuilding part of it as much as I do.
