5 Great Writing Blogs
September 7th 2009 12:12
Hi everyone. I'm pretty tired as I'm writing this; I had a long, but good, night. Today's scheduled item is a list post, and I spent the last twenty minutes debating what I was going to write a list of. I finally came to the conclusion that I'm too tired to write a list of good books (my brain can't readily conjure names to mind at this moment) or many of the other ideas that crossed my mind. So I've decided to write a list of good writing blogs.
What do I qualify as a good writing blog?
A blog which is well written and useful to writers looking to improve their craft and maybe make a career out of their writing, or at least get some short stories or novels into the world. These aren't in order from best to worst or worst to best.
1.Pub Rants the blog of a self-described 'very polite literary agent' writing about the publishing industry. I've been following this blog for a couple of years now and I really like it. Kristen's writing style is nice, the blog is personal and it's full of useful information about agents and such for writers.
2.Freelancing&Fiction the blog of a freelancer named Michy, who makes a living freelancing and is sending a novel around to various agents at this moment in time. She talks about a variety of things including her experience with the querying process and things freelancers will find useful, and is currently doing a Suite101 challenge. She also runs a great forum for writers which you can find if you check out the blog.
3.Magical Words this is a blog on which a few published fiction writers post. I just discovered it recently and so far I like it. It seems that each writer has a designated posting day during the week. The information is great, the style is excellent and the layout is really, really nice. Awesome site.
4.How Publishing Really Works this blog isn't updated as often as the others but it's a great blog with an insider view of the publishing industry. It's definitely worth checking out, looking through their archives and maybe signing up for their RSS feed.
5.Writer Beware Blogs! I've been an on and off reader of this blog for quite some time. This blog is written to help writers. It warns writers of scam artists and potential pitfalls. A good blog to read, both the current stuff and the archives.
All right. Gotta run, folks.
Thanks for reading!

Thanks for the writing blogs you cited on
September 7.
There's some great info on the ones I've had the
chance to check out.
Would you happen to know what publisher's
want novel manuscript page formating to
look like these days?
Double spaced, sure. Paragraphs indented?
Top right hand corner of the pages should
include last name of author, title and page number?
Sound correct or not?

Thanks for visiting!
Here are a couple links for standard manuscript format:
A Blog Entry About Standard Manuscript Format this also includes a downloadable sample manuscript.
Manuscript Formatting Checklist this is a checklist for your formatting.
Double spaced, usually one inch margins on all side, and a bunch of other stuff I don't remember. Make sure to check with each specific publisher you look into as to what they want in terms of manuscript formatting, it's usually close to those but not identical. Not following guidelines is the number one reason novels are rejected.
Hope this is useful.
