Fictional Worlds - July 2010

Every writer has times-days, weeks, sometimes even months or at worst years-where they fall far short of their writing goals. Every writer gets caught up in something called life once in a while and time passes them by. And I'm sure every writer has at least once looked at a clock and gone 'it's that time already? I have to leave now and I didn't get any writing done'.

Personally, I've spent most of the last month not writing. I've written quite a bit of poetry-almost half a book of poetry, actually-but very few blog posts and even fewer novel chapters. I looked at a calendar just the other day and went 'where did July go?'

So what does a writer do in such times? Renew their commitment to writing, of course. How does one do that? Well you start by looking at your routine. What do you do every day-or at least five days a week-without fail? This includes things like work, school, even your daily walk. After everything that's part of your routine, how much time do you have left in a day? Most people will probably have somewhere between three and seven hours of spare non-sleeping time. Some have less, some have more.

Now that you know how much time you have in a day that's not dedicated to routine things, figure out how much of that time you want to devote to enjoyable activities that aren't writing. Say you want to devote one hour to reading or one hour to video games. Or maybe you just want to make sure you have one hour of completely spare time every day during which you can just relax. Every person is different. I've got a lot of spare time because it's summer, and I'd like to keep it that way. Some people plan out every minute of their summer six months in advance. I think those people are crazy, but who am I to call anybody crazy?

After you've decided what else you want to do in your spare time, take a look at how much time you have left. You might not want to devote all of that time to your writing-if you've got a lot of spare time, spending it all on writing will probably burn you out sooner rather than later-and that's perfectly fine. But you want to make sure you're writing time is enough to get something worthwhile done every day. Everybody works at a different pace, so for some of us fifteen minutes is enough to get something done and for others it takes an hour to write a couple of pages. That's fine too.

You might also want to leave your weekends, or just one day of your weekends, completely open. This doesn't mean that you won't spend any time on your weekend writing, it just means that you don't have to. Though I don't have school or work, lots of my friends do, and parties are always on weekends; I won't be scheduling writing time into my weekends because that's my social time. Of course I'll still spend some time writing on my weekends, but if I don't get anything done, I have nothing to feel bad about.

When scheduling remember that it doesn't have to be a rigid schedule. You can make a commitment to spend at least one of the hours between six o'clock and ten o'clock writing, if that's your spare time and you're bad at schedules. So long as you get the writing done, it doesn't really matter what time of day you're doing it at. Writing is one of those things that can be done at any time of day or night, week or weekend. Some people work better with a rigid schedule and others work better with a minimal commitment.

So what does renewing my commitment to writing mean to me? It means that I've decided to spend two hours writing every day, five days a week, for the month of August. In September I'll cut back to one hour a day, five days a week.

What qualifies as writing during your writing time is a post of its own-and that post should be going up on Monday. In the meantime, I'd love to know what renewing the commitment to writing looks like for you.

Prompt of the Week

July 27th 2010 12:12
Today's Prompt Is:

Sunrise

My Response:

The sun is beautiful when seen from the right angle; rising over water is perhaps its most glorious moment, when all the world turns a strange pinkish colour and the water fades into the sky. I'm lucky to live in a place where I can see the sun rise over a beautiful lake each and every day. I might miss three hundred out of every three hundred and sixty five sunrises, but that doesn't make the sixty five that I do catch any less beautiful-it makes them perhaps more special.

In the quiet moments at the very start of the day, life is at its most beautiful and inspiration is at its finest. Who wouldn't be inspired by a picture such as this, where the sun rises over the trees? Who is not inspired by the planet's natural life all around them? Surely not I, for I find the best moments of inspiration come when I am alone with nature.

In today's life most of us spend the majority of our time inside, or at least in the depths of various cities, surrounded by the toxins from cars and overpopulation. We don't wake up to the sound of birds in the morning-indeed, we're lucky if we hear a single one. We don't walk through a forest to get to our friends' houses. We spend our time holed up inside, holed up in the city, away from nature and its inspiration.

Many people all over the world are starting to realize our mistakes. People are being called back to nature, one by one. We've fallen out of sync with our planet, with our only home, and we need to get back in sync-not only for the planet's well being but for ours as well. Most of us who live in cities have forgotten the inspiration and inner peace that a few hours alone with nature can give us. As writers we need to realize that in nature's furthest reaches the best stories are to be found, and we need to give ourselves time with the depths of that nature.

The sun is rising; can you hear the birds?

Your turn.

Prompt Of The Week

July 20th 2010 12:25
Today's prompt is:

Write 500 words about falling in love

My Response:

Love is something we all dream about. Everybody's looking for love. Everybody wants somebody to hold them for the rest of their life. Songs, poems, entire books have been written about falling in love, and even more have been written about falling out of love. Love can bring great happiness or great pain, great gain or great loss. Love can bring about joy and prosperity or it can bring about-in the wrong people-destruction and even war. Love is perhaps the greatest driving force on this planet other than the planet itself. And love is the biggest four letter word in the language.

We chase after love day after day. As children we seek plutonic love and the love of our parents; as teenagers and adults we seek the love with whom we will have our children. We torture ourselves looking for love. We base our worth on whether or not somebody else can love us-how screwed is that? And if nobody does love us the way we want to be loved, we think we're worthless or monstrous or any number of things. We convince ourselves that we're bad people or that we're ugly when really we're not. Women settle for men who beat them every day because they're convinced they deserve it, that they can't do better. Men settle for women who annoy them to no end for much the same reasons.

We are worth something even if nobody is in love with us, even if we cannot find love of the kind we're seeking. We are worth something so long as we try to be worth something, so long as we work towards creating a better future for us and our loved ones. Just because nobody loves you doesn't mean you aren't beautiful; maybe it just means that men are fools.

And sometimes, you know, love isn't enough for us to realize our worth. Even though somebody loves us, even though somebody wants to be with us, we still think that we're ugly, we still think that we're worthless. But if somebody else can delight in our body, if somebody else can adore our body, why can't we love it too? If we can love somebody's body, if we can adore somebody else's body, why can't we love our own? Do you just assume there's something wrong with the person who enjoys your body? Maybe that's a mistake.

If a thousand men tell you you're beautiful, a hundred of them are desparate and just want to get laid-but it's the other nine hundred who at least kind of mean it who you should be listening to. And if nobody tells you you're beautiful, than maybe the world is blind; most of us are beautiful, just some of us have beauty hidden on the inside.

Next time you're sad because you aren't in love, remember that there's somebody for everybody, but you have to become who you want to be before you can find somebody that wants to be with that person.

Your turn.
