Fictional Worlds - January 2010

Ouch!

January 29th 2010 17:29
As most of you know, I've got really bad carpal tunnel. Sometime over the winter break, I lost my wrist brace. Because of that and doing a lot of work very quickly for school, I'm in quite a lot of pain.

I'm going to be taking a long weekend away from the blog in the hopes that my wrist will feel better by Monday, if only a little bit.

If you want to talk to me about anything about writing, send me an email. If you would like to guest post here over the weekend, also send me an email.

I'll probably post a link post tomorrow or Saturday to give you guys some interesting reading material, but other than that you won't be hearing from me until Monday.

Thanks for your patience.

Publication: I Dream Of Freedom

January 28th 2010 12:57
Yesterday my poem, I Dream of Freedom, was published at Uhuru. You can find the poem here (clicky).

Uhuru's mission is to raise awareness, and to raise money to help free children who are enslaved around the world. The writers don't get paid, but it gets your work out there and it's going to a good cause.

Not much else to say today. Finished all my school work and now I'm rather exhausted mentally.

A Reading List

January 27th 2010 12:28
I've decided that as well as making writing goals for this year, I'm going to create a list of books that I want to read this year. Of course the list is subject to change at any moment, depending on how quickly I'm reading. It also depends on things like money and what I can find in the library. Some of these books are fiction, some of them are non-fiction, and a couple of them are books about writing.

Here goes:

Fiction
~A Scientific Romance-I'm reading this one, almost done

~A Series Of Unfortunate Events 11-I'm too lazy to find it and look at the title right now. Not the best of books, but I just want to finish the series...

~George R. R. Martin's A Game Of Thrones-I read part of this one, and then my copy was stolen. Got a new one, will start over.

~George R. R. Martin's A Clash Of Kings-I lucked into getting this book... someone was giving it away! Crazy! Means I can read the first two books right away.

~The second book in the wolf series I started reading last year. Too lazy to search for it and don't want to wake anyone up to ask where it is.

~Give Up The Ghost By Megan Crewe-I'm going to be buying this with my last Chapters card from Christmas when I finish the Unfortunate Events one.

~The Black Dagger Brotherhood series-is a series cheating? Well, I'm listing it as one book. Really interesting concepts, and I've heard good things.

~Curse the Dawn by Karen Chance-this seems like it could be a really fascinating/really good vampire book. It could also suck. We'll see.

Non-fiction/books about writing:

~Self Editing For Fiction Writers by Browne and King

~The First Five Pages by Noah Lukeman

~Nelson Mandela-it's a biography of Nelson Mandela. I'm reading it but it's rather dry. It was better at the beginning.

~Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond.

I also want to do some reading up on Native culture and history here in Canada and I'd like to read up more on the history of Scotland. Don't have any titles yet.

Are there any books that you want to read this year?

The Love Of Books

January 26th 2010 12:15
For the last few months, my teachers (wonderful people that they are) have been feeding me good books. Ishmael Beah was a recommendation from my English teacher for an assignment involving reading a biography or autobiography. I loved it-a terrible story, one that I wish wasn't true, but well told and showing an underside much darker than the one here in my own city.

Right now I'm reading a book called A Scientific Romance that was recommended by my geography teacher and given to me by my English teacher. (Crazy stuff.) You'll get a full book review probably at the end of this week or the beginning of the next. Suffice to say that it's one of the most interesting books I've ever read

Day Six: Outline your next draft

January 24th 2010 12:26
Today you're going to make an outline not of your novel as it is but of your novel as you feel it should be. This means making up a list of scenes, in order from storyline first to last. Include the scenes/chapters that you want to add, and the ones that you want to delete. Cross out the ones that you want to delete so that you know that they exist and need to be removed. Put stars beside the ones you know need the most work.

Once you've made your outline answer the following questions

Day Five: Throwaways and Add Ons

January 23rd 2010 12:52
Today you're going to make two lists.

The first list is a list of scenes you want to add to your novel. These scenes must add to your novel in some way-they must develop your characters, help your readers understand your world, or advance the plot. You've already got a full first draft, and anything you add to that needs to be worth the extra padding

Day Four: Outlining Your Draft

January 22nd 2010 12:24
Today you're going to create an outline for your finished first draft. You can look at some of my posts written on different methods of outlining, which you can find
starting with this post
, this post on the Snowflake method, this post about the Phase Outline, and this review of the Three Act Method. The series ends with this post (clicky). Today we're going to use a very basic method of outlining, but you can use a different one if you like.

Today you're going to be asking yourself some questions about your own personal strengths and weaknesses. But first I wanted to mention that I found a really interesting blog post (clicky) talking about good books to read about writing. An interesting post and an interesting blog.

Day Two: Questions About Tone

January 20th 2010 12:11
Today you're going to finish reading your manuscript if you haven't done so already, summarize your novel in no more than 200 words, and answer the following questions:

~What is the main theme of your novel? What is it's message/what do you want to accomplish by telling this story

Day One: Reread

January 19th 2010 12:29
Today read as much of your book as you possibly can find time for. Don't correct anything. You can print out your novel for this, but I think it's a waste of time, paper, and ink.

Don't correct anything. If something bothers you, mark it off with an asterisk or put a star in the margin and keep reading

Organization Workshop-Intro

January 18th 2010 12:59
Those of us whose noveling efforts were particularly disastrous will need to organize our stories before we begin the editing process. Even if you've got a well organized novel, you'll still want an idea of where you're going with your edits.

Over the course of this workshop you will figure out what your story looks like right now, what you want it to look like, and what you want to accomplish. You will also get an idea of how you want to edit. You will evaluate the novel's strengths and also its weaknesses

Sick

January 17th 2010 22:56
I spent Thursday night puking my guts out, Friday sleeping, Friday night wishing I was sleeping, and pretty much my whole weekend sick. I haven't gotten any school work done, so I'm just as behind-if not more so-as I was when I started this stomach sickness.

It kind of feels like the world is conspiring against me, trying to make it so that I don't pass my classes this semester. Computer scares, stomach flus, the world is throwing whatever it can to distract me at me. I've got just over a week left to do quite a lot of work, and I don't know how I'm going to find the time to do it and keep up with my writing

A Story Idea For You

January 14th 2010 12:28
I'm just writing up a quick post for now because I'm rather tired. We had a computer scare here yesterday, but luckily my computer programming uncle fixed the computer for us really quickly. It made me think though.

My life depends on this computer. Not only do I need it to write my books, to work on my blog, and to network with other writers, but I need it for school. The idea that it could have been dead had me in tears, had me panicking. We can't afford a new computer. What would I do without it

On the WriYe forums I found a thread from a newbie writer asking for advice. This person has never written a novel before this year. So I got to thinking: what kinds of advice would I give to a newbie writer? I may not be a well known author with dozens of publications under my belt, but I've been writing for about half my lifetime and I like to think that I've learned a fair bit about it throughout the last few years.

So I've come up with a few tips for reaching your writing goals in 2010. These are tips aimed to help the beginner, but they're also good to keep in mind no matter how many years of experience you have. So here goes

Quick Survey

January 12th 2010 23:57
I'm just putting this out there a second time because the first time I didn't get very many responses. I've built a quick survey to find out why you read Fictional Worlds and what you want to get out of it. You can do the survey by clicking here. It shouldn't take more than two or three minutes.

Thanks for reading and thanks in advance for your response. Without your help I can't know how to make Fictional Worlds a better reading experience.

Sad Farewells

January 11th 2010 12:54
I want to talk briefly about something that's going on in my personal life today.

In Toronto, we have quite a lively club scene. For a year and a half, I've been partying at a club called the Big Bop, at all the all ages events I could make it to. It's a pretty grimey, really old building, but it has character and I've come to love it and many of the people that I've met in it over the last year

A Great Blog Post And Other Things

January 9th 2010 14:22
Now that you've let your Nanovel sit in a corner in a closet someplace, it's time to start thinking about rereading your novel. You don't want to start rewrites just yet, but you do want to start thinking about what you would like to redo or change in your novel.

If you click here you will find a blog post about revision. It's always good to consider another writer's process and to experiment with new methods of revision

Top Fifteen And Quick Thoughts

January 8th 2010 13:19
I got an email yesterday saying that my poem Unchained has been listed as one of the top 15 writing pieces published at Uhuru. You can find the list of submissions here (clicky). This is a selection of the most popular pieces, those with the highest ratings and those the editor likes the most. I'm really proud to be on that list.

My posts have been short of late but I've been working on workshops for this blog. Over the next few days I'm going to be doing prompt/free writes for my English class and I will be posting the prompts and my responses here

Frustration

January 7th 2010 12:23
The last few days have been utterly exhausting. I haven't been able to get anything done on either the school or the writing front, and I'm really disappointed in myself. I really need to get back into the flow of things at school, need to get back into the flow of my writing. I don't know how to get myself back into either one though.

As much as the two week holiday break was a relief for me, it seems to me that it wasn't enough. I didn't spend enough time actually relaxing, I think. I just can't get back into focus, and I don't know what to do

Writing Plan 2010

January 4th 2010 13:24
So, this year one of my writing goals is to spend more time writing. I'm going to start with a goal for writing 3-5 hours a week, spending the majority of time working on fiction projects and at least one hour working on this blog.

This plan is going to be a gradual increase in the time that I spend writing. I'm starting off with a blog schedule for three out of six days of blogging, giving me an idea what needs to get done, and every Sunday I'm going to do an hour of worldbuilding

Book Review: A Road Out Of Hell

January 2nd 2010 16:33
I won an advance reading copy of this book from YA book central (clicky) and I just finished reading it the other day. It's the true story of a series of murders that must be famous in America but which I'd never heard of until I entered the competition for the book.

I quite enjoyed this book. The writing is not always of the highest quality, and the story is very grim-a boy is taken by his demented uncle from Canada down to America and gruesomely beaten, eventually even forced to help his uncle commit murder-but it pulls you right along. You fall into the story and you stay there
