Fictional Worlds - June 2009

Jihad-A Seven Book Series

June 30th 2009 21:03
Those of you who have been with me as readers or as writing friends for a while will know that Jihad has been with me for quite a long time. It started as one book in which the main character is thrown out of our world and into a completely alien one on the brink of war. In essence Jihad is about her mission to end the war.

The Jihad was based off of many Gods very real to the world and the mistakes they had made in the past. There was one war seven hundred years before our main character gets transported. The enemies were 'defeated' but now they are returning.

It has now grown into a huge seven book series. The world building is absolutely astounding, as is the character work that I am doing. Jihad has virtually become its own binder.

Here's an idea of the seven books:

~Storm Rising-The first book in which we see the beginning of the first war: the great alliance, the growing tensions and finally the breaking point. This is the book in which we learn most about Fidolius.

~Alaendril-The story of Alaendril. The first few chapters are about his childhood and the life he left behind; then we are transported to him in the war near the end of his fighting career. We watch him fight and we watch him abandon the fight for the woman he falls in love with.

~Elizabeth-The story of the Queen who put the kingdom back together with the help of the fallen King's brother. (The King during the first Jihad falls of plague towards the end of the war.)

~The Summoner-Summoners are an ancient sect of Fidolius which died out long before even the first Jihad. This is the story of one of them.

~Elvish Rising-The story of the First Elvish King, the man who united the Elves and brought them under one government of sorts.

~Jihad-The original story mentioned above; however it doesn't finish in one novel anymore.

~Dawn-In which the Enemy is defeated for once and for all.

And I'll probably write up a reference book just because I can with all the background work I'm doing.

Planning And An Exercise Again

June 30th 2009 20:48
I've spent much of today jotting down ideas for posts, exercises and series of posts. I have enough ideas for a year; all I need to do is pick one every time I get the chance to post here.

I've also decided to do the Dear Diary exercise again during the month of July. I did this exercise in February and found it great for writing consistently and becoming more familiar with my character in question.

Dear Diary is basically an exercise-every day for a month I write a diary entry of about a thousand words from the perspective of a certain character-the diary covers a straight month of their life. When I did this exercise in February I chose the Goddess Astarael as the focus and a crucial time-part of the first Jihad-in her life as the timeframe.

I enjoyed this exercise because it let me see into her head and let me understand more fully the emotions she went through. When I write the story flows out of me. I came to know her voice, the one she writes with and the one she speaks with. She showed me things about herself that I never would have found out otherwise-and kept me writing every day, even if I didn't make it online to post here.

Here are three of my favourite Diary entries:

Day Really Long Link
Day Really Long Link
Day Really Long Link

This time around I will be writing from the perspective of Alaendril. I will be writing about a month during the first Jihad in which he fought. I'm hoping that this will help me when I later write his actual book-about his experience in the first war and him finally running-with the reality of the war.

I will be writing my first entry tomorrow. You should see it here.

Heartless

Heartless
---------------
You told me you loved me;
Your arms
Were so warm
Your lips
So soft
Your embrace
So tight
I thought you would never let go
You promised me so.

We said
Forever
I meant it
Now I wonder
Did you ever?

I see you now;
You hold her hand
But you look different

I see you're cruel
Now
When you hurt me

First
You broke my heart;
Then
You stole hers
Now
You walk over me
Like I am nothing
But dirt.

Your eyes
Now
Cold
Distant
Sad
Broken

Heartless...

What destroyed it?
What
Took you from me?
What
Made you so cruel?

Why
Would you hurt me
In so many ways?
Couldn't you have just
Said good bye the
Easy way instead?

You were so kind
So soft
So gentle

And now
You are so cruel
So heartless...

What happened to you?

For Young Writers

June 30th 2009 04:48
A long time ago (something like a year and a bit, I believe) I signed up for the Fundsforwriters newsletters. (Fundsforwriters, Fundsforwriters Small Markets, and WritingKid respectively) WritingKid is a newsletter which focuses on displaying markets for young people. (From the age of 'I can write' to college age.)

My publication in Teen Ink was largely thanks to this newsletter, and now I've discovered a small press which publishes books by teens. Because of their restrictions on violence, none of my proper novel-length projects are suitable for this publisher

Updating

So... as everyone who is still reading-thank you, by the way, for bearing with me under the circumstances-is most likely aware, my laptop got sat on a couple months ago. I'm still really upset about this and have not gotten the money back nor a replacing computer.

As such I am now MONTHS behind my writing schedule, which is awful. I haven't been able to actively work on novels and I've only really gotten back into my worldbuilding in the last week or so-losing the computer was not only a blow to my writing in that I then had no computer, but also in that I kind of lost my willpower for a month or two as far as my writing is concerned
