Fictional Worlds - January 2009

I've been working very hard on my world building of late. I'm severely behind in my own workshop (ack), but I've been working hard on building my world for Jihad. I've written five pages about each and every God and Goddess, all by hand in my binder as well as transcribed to my word file.

Worldbuilding gets old, it gets boring, it gets tedious. But it has to be done; you need to know all the little details, and who knows, when you're dead they might get published.

If you are getting bored of worldbuilding, you've been at it for a while with no real results, or it feels like it's going nowhere, stop. Take a break. Take a deep breath.

Write a short fanfic, or a very short realistic fic. Write a short story of some sort, completely not dependent upon the details of your world. Or write an article about something in the world around us, one perhaps to be sold to a local magazine. Write a poem about something that isn't bothering you, about something nice.

Or, if you absolutely must work on your world, do something new and different with it. Try one of these exercises:

1. Write a short (500) story about a historical 'prank', a great heist of some sort-something that isn't about rules, but is about breaking them.

2. Write a short story in which one of the Gods or Goddesses of your world does something outrageously silly, yet still in character.

3. Write a short story about a wandering con artist who tries to con a person-who turns out to be a God taken on human form.

4. Write a short story in which a king, somewhere along the line, is making a great toast and spills wine all over himself, and the reactions of the people.

5. Write a short story in which two people of different cultures meet and make fun of each other's Gods and Goddesses over a few beers-it can even end in a brawl if you like.

All of these things give you little details about your world, good history and myths, and they can be quite fun. I'll be trying my hand at some of them tomorrow.

If you do try one of my exercises, post a paragraph or two from your experiment-I'll post one of mine tomorrow.

Thanks for reading,
~Dianna

Struggling

January 29th 2009 04:07
So far in 2009 I've managed to blog consistently, but it hasn't been easy. There's been a lot going on in my life outside my writing, and my writing is suffering for it; it's just hard for me to write when I'm going through hard times-at least, anything other than poetry.

Things have sort of settled down now, and I'm hoping the writing will become easier for me, but I can't know for sure. We all have times when we struggle, even to do the things we love-especially for those of us who suffer depression.

But each time we pull through, and manage to make the post we didn't think was possible, we are showing, proving our true strength. We are showing that we really are determined to get what we want, by showing that we are willing to work for it.

I work hard to keep myself writing, even if it's just a blog post each day; that's something, and that something is important to me. Every little word is something.

If you're struggling, it's okay. It's okay to admit that you're having a hard time, even if it's something you truly, truly love. It's not okay to just give up. You have to keep going at it, and you can get through it. You can survive to see the other side, the good things in life.

I'm going to post something else sometime tonight, but I just wanted to say that.

A Poem

January 28th 2009 05:25
It's been a very long day so I'm just going to post an old poem of mine. Sorry everyone.
---
Bleed

Bleed
Your crimson tears
Of pain, sorrow, despair&loneliness
Your broken heart you wish would
Just forget to beat
I bleed because I'm sad
I bleed because I miss you
I bleed because it takes away the pain
I bleed so I can survive
I bleed because I love him...
I bleed because not to would mean to die.

I bleed to live;
And one day
I will bleed
To die.

Don't try to stop me
Don't try to truly understand
Don't look below the cover
Don't look-
To see the scars would break you
To see the marks would take you
Into hell-
And you cannot stop me
Let me bleed in secret;
You can't stop me
Suffering in silence.

Spice Up Your Writing Life

January 27th 2009 05:45
This is just a list of five things you can do to spice up your writing life. I would go more indepth but I had an exam today and it hurt my wrist-a lot.

1. Try a new form. If you've only ever written short stories, try a poem or a novel. Start your own blog. It may not seem like the best idea in the world, you may think a certain form of writing is better or worse than another, but they really are all equal. With writing like with everything else we have our own personal tastes

Haunted

January 26th 2009 04:42
My poem Haunted has recently been published at Every Day Poetry which can be found here: Really Long Link

This publication pays token amounts, however I chose to donate the dollar back to the publication. Though again this isn't a huge achievement, I'm glad to be getting my name out there (and on Google

A Story

January 26th 2009 00:10
Just the story of a villain character I'm working on:

Kamilla was born on a farm, like her two brothers and three sisters. From a young age she worked each day from dawn until dusk, maintaining the farm. She got her free education, but the only member of her family allowed any of the courses for a fee was her eldest brother, who learned to hunt

Working

January 25th 2009 08:03
Writing isn't always easy. The words sometimes come only with force. Sometimes we get bogged down trying to create our worlds. We get fed up when we find out that somebody's already had the same idea. We get depressed, bored, fed up, angry with all the world and with our muses.

We get angry because everything we're writing sounds like crap. We get angry because we feel we aren't getting anywhere

Rant: Building Religion

January 18th 2009 22:40
Building a structured religion and building the Gods which they follow are two different processes, though they are connected for obvious reasons. Here are some things you should look at when building religions using Gods you've already built.

What do these Gods stand for? Before you can describe how they are worshiped, you need to know what they stand for. If you don't keep what they stand for in mind at all times while building the religion, it's probably not going to make much sense

Learning

January 17th 2009 03:52
Writing is in large part a learning process. A writer needs to be open to new things; this is why we have classes and workshops and books about writing. Not all things will work for you, this is true. We're all different. You probably won't find a class that's absolutely perfect for you. A method won't always work.

But if you don't try new things, how can you possibly know? Everything changes; our writing should too. Let's take the example of a well known author, JK Rowling of the Harry Potter series

Teen Ink Publication

January 14th 2009 16:03
A poem of mine just got published on Teen Ink Raw. If it gets high ratings/votes it will be placed in a prominent spot on the site and I will receive payment for it.

This isn't a prestigious publication in my mind but it does provide me with exposure, and I'm glad to have that benefit

The Struggle of Writing Daily

January 12th 2009 13:24
Some writers can quite happily and easily write every day; others like myself are horrible procrastinators, whose inspiration comes and goes. We love our craft, yes, but don't always have the willpower to get through it each and every day. For those of us who suffer from depression, this may be a symptom of it. We all deal with hard times in different ways-I write poetry when I'm depressed. I can't focus long enough for a novel-length project. Other people pour their heart and soul into novels because it's all they can do.

I've been trying to write at least a short blog post every day and have so far succeeded for the most part. I'm proud of this; I'm hoping that I can keep it up for the rest of the year. I do enjoy blogging, and I enjoy knowing that people read my work. It's not that huge a number-my daily stats keep my ego down to be sure-but it's something

Rant: Building Gods

January 11th 2009 11:48
If your book has a very important religious aspect, you need to carefully build up the mythology and the deities as characters almost. For my work on the Jihad series, I've been building up Loki for the last few days.

Loki is originally a Norse god of mischief. In Norse mythology he was often presented as evil, almost, with the pranks he would play on the other Gods; but in dire times of need he pulled through and saved the Gods. This happened on more than one occasion

Workshop up!

January 9th 2009 09:43
I've moved the workshop to a new forum in order to escape the number of spammers. I will not be putting a link on the site itself in case the spammers follow.

The new forum can be found here

Loss

January 8th 2009 22:13
My best friend's dad just died, and today we had his service. I didn't know him very well, but I know she loved him dearly. It's a sad day, a sad loss. The greatest injustice known to man.

For today I can't think coherently enough to do a proper post; my mind is mush. Too much stress at those things
