Fictional Worlds - December 2008

The Use Of Critiques

December 31st 2008 11:40
Critiques-when you look at other people's work and evaluate it, giving it constructive criticism, or when somebody does the same for you. What is their use?

The use of getting critiques is usually pretty obvious. Other people are commenting on your writing, telling you what works, what doesn't, what they like, what they don't like; you get outside opinions. But what is the use of giving critiques?

Personally critiquing for me is fun. I get to help writers and I get to read some great stories. One author I work with in particular writes really amazing fantasy. I enjoy reading the work of different authors, and I truly enjoy helping other writers out.

That's my favorite advantage. Some of these stories won't make it to publication for one reason or another, but I get to read them-not only that, but I get to work with another writer and help them better their work. I get to be part of the process. If I see their book on the shelf I can proudly say 'I critiqued that. I helped make that book what it is today.'

The other advantage is that it helps you spot things in your own writing. It may not make that much of a difference in the writing stage, but what you've learned will show more in your rewriting stages. You'll be able to point out more and more in both your stories and those of the writers you're critiquing with practice.

One more advantage-it helps you make friends. You get to meet other writers, talk to them and even form bonds with them over time.

Everyone's favorite type of critique is one that provides constructive criticism-what a person did and did not like, what they think does and does not work, that sort of thing. Short critiques are fine for short works-but most people prefer longer critiques the longer their work gets.

My personal longest critique was probably just over 800 words on a story that was around three or four thousand words. That's almost a third of the story-of critiquing. I don't always point out every little thing, but I do go out of my way to make sure there's an example of each repeating problem pointed out.

My critiques may come out harsh-I try not to spare the writers, try to be honest-but I don't mean them that way. I mean them to help the writer with their own writing process. To help them learn. To show writers and readers what works and what doesn't.

That is the point of my upcoming first page critiques on here. I have one volunteer and am looking for five more. I'll start them in the new year; life has been and will likely continue to be very busy.

If you're looking for a critique of your first 250 words, please email me at diannalgunn@gmail.com

If you're looking for a good critique community, try http://www.critiquecircle.com/

And if you've never done a critique before or had one-try it. You'll need a thick skin, but if you have one you'll like it. And trying new things is always good for a writer.

Going Into The New Year

December 31st 2008 02:38
We're all getting ready for the upcoming year; setting ourselves goals we may or may not actually complete, wrapping up old threads, old stories from the last year. It is a time of transition from one thing to the next-and for some of us, the transition is extreme.

Some of us will be looking for new jobs, new homes, new lovers, new friends in the upcoming year; there are those of us who want to change ourselves, the things we surround ourselves with, the people we spend our days with. And it's almost the new year.

I'm looking forward to the new year, really; it's going to be great fun. I've got so much planned out-my writing goals, everything; I'm going to be looking for my first job-we'll see how that goes-and probably even moving out at the end of the year.

I met someone very recently, someone who has changed my life just by existing; I've found a new best friend, or so it seems. Someone who will stand by me-and who I will stand by until the end of time if need be.

We all meet people who change our lives, for the better or the worse. I hope to continue to meet people who can change my life, who can help me, who I can help, over the course of the next year. I hope I can go further with my writing. It's my passion, my life. It means everything to me, in the end; my life is writing, writing is my life. There is nothing else I know.

I'm going into the new year with high expectations for myself and low expectations for others; I will help people, I will write, and I will be myself. I'm determined; there are so many things I have to do, and I want to get each and every one of them done.

Let's all go into the new year reaching for our hopes and dreams.

Tomorrow begins 2009. And starting from tomorrow, I will blog every other day. No loopholes.

Happy New Year everyone. I hope 2009 is good for you.

Saving You

December 28th 2008 23:27
Sorry guys, I haven't posted in a couple of days and this is because of various things; Christmas dinners and then crap that went down with friends.

Anyway, this is a prompt.
----------------------------- ----------------------------- -----------------
Saving you
Is just the right thing to do;
I can't just watch
Pain and abuse.

You know I care
I would do the same
For anyone;
You've hurt so bad
I don't know if you can fully heal;
But I hope you can
And I'm here to help.

I'm here to help you
I'm here to save you
From their darkness
And your own;
Come with me,
And I will help you
I will save you
I will bring you out
Of the darkness.

Saving you
Is the only thing
I feel I can do.

I'm sorry I couldn't
Have saved you then.

Some Highlights

December 25th 2008 05:26
Today I'm going to highlight some of my favourite things to read. The first few are going to be actual books that I've loved and read more than once; the last few are going to be blog entries geared specifically towards writers. Reading for the cold winter months: curl up with a good book under your favourite blanket-don't we all just love it?

For those of you who have gotten Christmas money, some books to consider

Writers Read

December 24th 2008 13:01
Part of becoming a better writer is reading; not just books about writing, though those are good, but books in your genre, outside your genre, nonfiction, everything and anything. They can show you how to put a book together; how to write back cover copy; how to weave stories. Nonfiction can teach you, can generate ideas, et cetera.

For those of us who are broke (like myself), or who want to read books under public domain but not buy them for whatever reason, this is a great resource to help you read

Writing Resolutions

December 24th 2008 02:53
We all know about 'New Year's Resolutions', and we all know we don't usually follow them. What are your 'writing resolutions' or goals for the new year? Do you want to find a publisher? Do you want to enter such and such contest? Do you want to write X number of words, or books?

Here are some writing sites to support you throughout the coming year, with all of your writing endeavors

So I'm completely and utterly burnt out thanks to Nanowrimo followed by getting back to school followed by the endless week of Christmas. I've got the workshop 95% finished, and since it's almost the new year, here are my writing goals for the year:

Bah

December 21st 2008 08:29
OK guys, Of Mice And Men is still under copyright and not public domain. Because of this, I'm not going to be critiquing the first chapter, because it isn't online. I'm working away at the workshop exercises and getting quite a ways, though it's mostly only applicable to fantasy; I'm trying to find a way to work around this, but never having written outside of my genre, I'm not doing a great job.

Of course, if anybody wants to do the six weeks of writing without the planning, I don't mind that too much. In fact, that's just fine

Ack...

December 19th 2008 19:11
I've been horribly burnt out the last couple of days and am failing at finding an online version of chapter one, because I want to actually put up a link and throw in some quotes but am too lazy to copy it from the book. Bah. I'm also going to be out of town for a couple of days.

For now, please take a look at my workshop

Sorry Guys

December 18th 2008 08:38
I'm burnt out from a looong day, things I didn't need to know, stuff like that. Sorry I haven't been around for a couple of days, I've just been exhausted and my wrist was awful yesterday-so much so that I was in tears. I got a Reiki treatment on it, which was amazing so now it doesn't hurt (though I'm sure it'll start up again soon enough, still swollen) and I've started my English class up again.

I'm currently working on the Chrysalids AND I just started on Of Mice And Men. So what do we have to look forward to tomorrow

What makes a writer?

December 12th 2008 06:31
I've gone over this before, but I was reading a thread on Forward Motion earlier and it's been a while, so I felt like writing about this topic.

What makes a writer in my mind is someone who loves to write. Someone who can't help themselves; they just need to do it like most people need to breath. Writing is a passion, writing is a love; when the going gets tough we still keep going. Writers love to do what they do, and are willing to work at it

Worldbuilding

December 10th 2008 20:53
I write dark fantasy; and in fantasy there is usually quite a bit of extensive worldbuilding that is done in preparation for the book/series you're writing. This can at times be tedious-it can also be incredibly fun. The following things are some things to seriously look into when building your world:

Geography mapping it out is a very, very good idea; you need to know where people are going. If you're doing journey fantasy, you need to know where the people are journeying too. If your story takes place in a city, you're going to need the little details of the city, even if your character doesn't bring them up in terms of narration

A call for help

December 9th 2008 20:56
So I realized today that my writing exercises for the workshop are largely applicable to fantasy, and not so much to other genres. (I've never written any other genre, not my fault!) So I'm going to ask for a couple people to step up to the plate and write a few exercises for the following genres:

-Horror

Writing Rants: Beginnings

December 9th 2008 18:56
Back onto my fantasy rants... shall be fun. (For me, at least.) I've been wandering Critique Circle of late (critiquecircle.com) and have read a couple first chapters of novels. This is what I've noticed that they've done wrong, and how to do it right. This one applies to all novels but is specifically focused on fantasy, because that's the genre I write and thus know the most about.

Exposition I read one first/second chapter story in which the very first sentence was great, as was the story idea. Unfortunately, there was quite a bit of exposition; it read slowly, all in overly detailed sentences and paragraphs. It drove me almost crazy, but I finished the crit and the chapters

Duotrope's Digest is a directory through which you can search for markets for short stories, poetry, collections, and novels. It's like a writer-friendly search engine with a great database of markets. I have submitted to several magazines that I found via Duotrope. It's a good site which runs purely on donations. Post-Nano Boredom?

December 7th 2008 20:03
If you read through the forums you'll find plenty of this-the boredom that comes with the knowledge that Nano is over, you don't have to push yourself to write X number of words each day. Considering the amount that I was writing on the days when I was writing, this is quite a lot of time that's suddenly freed up, for me to do whatever I like with.

The projects I have taken on-blogging properly again, building this writer's workshop, and finishing Fallen-don't seem to be enough to fill my time. It's a comparatively lax goal of about two thousand words on Fallen a day and one to two days worth of exercises for the workshop. Even moderating the one site, it seems like there's very little for me to do

What Nanowrimo Taught Me

December 6th 2008 18:13
The forums are still up-year-round, if they can keep the funding up-and I was wandering them today when I found a thread about what Nanowrimo taught writers. This is what, over the years, Nanowrimo has taught me:

'04-Nanowrimo 04 taught me that I was capable of anything, especially when it comes to proving people wrong. Fifty thousand words is no small feat for an eleven year old; and I am to this day very proud of myself in that regard. It also taught me that sitting down to write every day can be a challenge-but the feeling of winning, of completing something, is well worth it at least once a month

Just thought I'd announce that to the world

A Writer's Workshop: The Details

December 4th 2008 17:26
This is the idea of the workshop I'm currently preparing to go live in January (signups begin in the last weeks of December most likely):

Plenty of people want to write-and plenty of people never finish anything, plenty of people never really follow their dreams. This is a twelve week program in which to plan and write that novel you always dreamed of

Possible Hiatus

December 3rd 2008 13:52
Because of my wrist-which I'm getting X-rayed today to see what's wrong with it-and the fact that soon I will be swamped with homework (I just missed a month of school), I may not be able to post for the next week or two. I will try to keep posting as regularly as possible, but it will likely slow down.

Thanks for your time and consideration. I want to say thanks to everyone who reads this-and especially everyone who comments

November's over-And now?

December 3rd 2008 13:23
Here are some links to various sites by and for writers-specifically those of us who have participated in Nanowrimo. Some of these are blogs/other sites by Nanos who have been a great support to me, some of them are designed to keep Nanos going throughout the year. So here goes:

The first link is a page on the Nanowrimo site itself-the 'I wrote a novel, now what?' page that they put up every year in the first week of December is now live
