Fictional Worlds - August 2008

Gratuitous Sex/Violence Rant

August 31st 2008 07:59
I did say I'd get into this one eventually. And we all know how much I love gratuitous sex and violence... in fanfiction. This is purely personal opinion, as are all of my upcoming rants. Take my advice with a grain of salt. I'm not the best writer out there, I'm not a genius, I'm not very accomplished in the writing world as of yet. But here goes nothing...

What Qualifies As Gratuitous? If you're writing it because you want to, not because it advances the plot, it's gratuitous. It does not need to be in the story (and sometimes whole stories can be written without sex and without violence-or with minimal violence) it is just there because you wanted to write it, not because it adds anything. Some people would argue that everything a person writes is because they want to write.

It's true, to some extent. We do choose our stories to an extent; but we also know what furthers a character's development, or the plot, or what have you. Writers instinctively know where every scene and action takes your character.

If it does not change anything or reveal anything, it is not necessary. It is gratuitous.

Where does Gratuitous belong? In fanfiction; personal writing exercises; not in published material. In my opinion there CAN be an element of the gratuitous in any story. Perhaps you didn't need to go into quite so much detail in the fight scene or sex scene (in fact, fade to black is perfectly good in just about any sex scene, and minimal detail in almost any fight), but you did, and you did it well so it didn't bog the story down.

This is fine. I don't mind knowing exactly how the characters felt, how every kiss moved them, as long as it's well written. In such a way that it enchants you-like in Anne Rice books. Looking at them objectively, they don't need to be so long. There doesn't have to be that luxurious detail of every touch between two characters, or of the Mayfair house. Or of Lestat, or Gabrielle, or Armand... but it defines her books and it belongs. It doesn't stand out as gratuitous-even though some of it probably is.

How does one make the gratuitous fit? I would say that if you're going to have gratuitous sex or violence, you have to make it flow. You can't spend twenty pages describing the bloody battle and then one describing the healer's tent. If you're going to have more detail than strictly necessary, you have to make that consistent. Your character has to be observant-it has to fit with the voice, the pace, the story.

Some scenes you know are meant to be written in more or less detail in order to serve their purpose. If you're giving a scene more detail than it absolutely needs, you need to do that with more than one scene, so that the reader doesn't automatically go 'oh, this person really likes describing gore but hates writing about love'. You need to make sure that the readers aren't thinking about you, the writer, but about the character.

The flow and voice still remain important, as does characterization and other fun things. You cannot sacrifice them in the name of Porn Without Plot. That is a fatal flaw in any writer.

Keeping it sparse. If you don't have gratuitous, that's great. How do you avoid it? It takes constant questioning of yourself, of your characters, and of your story. You have to know what belongs, what is necessary to develop your characters, your world. To change that world and those characters; to direct the story on its chosen path.

This takes work. It may mean cutting out some of your favourite scenes and passages, it may mean destroying entire chapters of beautifully written prose. But if you don't want it to be consistently detailed to a large extent, then all gratuity must be cut out. This can be a painful process-so can most of editing, even writing the first draft can be painful at times. It can also be necessary.

If you want to see gratuitous done in such a way that it doesn't seem gratuitous, I recommend Anne Rice and also Lady Of The Hay. (If you can ever find the latter; it isn't a very well known book, but it's one of my Gods in the book world)

I'm going to stop writing this now. Next time, a beginnings rant, I think. What do you want, out of these three:

~Beginnings Rant
~Love Triangle Rant
~Class System Rant

Whichever has the most people wanting me to write it, I'll write it tonight or tomorrow. And sorry if this turns out to be a bunch of jumbled crap that doesn't do anyone any good-I'm new to this.

I Bleed

August 29th 2008 06:42
I bleed
For all your cruel lies
I bleed
For the world you stuck me in
I bleed
To see the hate in your eyes.

If you hate me
Leave me be
Let me rest in peace
Maybe if
From you I am free
Then someday
I won't have to bleed.

I bleed
Because I can't tell you
All that I could say
If only my heart would let me
I bleed because I will not tell you
How much it kills me
To just be with you.

Because even though I hate you
I cannot hurt you
The only one who deserves to hurt
Is me
This was my doing in the first place,
Right?

I bleed
Because that is the pain
You can see
But which I never have
To explain-
Because you don't want to hear it.

Generic Stuff

August 27th 2008 06:18
I don't have much to write today. The creative juices have started to flow again after my weekend without food or sleep. I wrote a few pages of Jihad and some worldbuilding notes for Markinash, the world 2 of my 2008 Nanowrimos is going to be in.

Because Moonshadow's Guardian has been freed up from its place in Double Dragon's submission list, I'm going to focus on getting that published while I take some extra time to finish and edit Jihad. This means two things...

One is that I can take my time and work on multiple projects at the same time...

Two is that I can have a life again...

One is obviously the more important of the two of them. Oh, I'm also eating again after my almost fast last week. It feels great to actually have food in my belly.

This also means I have time to do my fantasy rants. Which I might do the first one of tonight, but probably not. I'm going to start them soon, though, I promise.

Oh, and in case you hadn't noticed, I've put 62 or so pages of poetry up on Lulu for $1.25 as an eBook. Why? Because I can, and because it's not like I'll ever find a better place to put a poetry collection. I'm hoping to publish one of these a year on Lulu, 'cause I'm cool like that.

Now I'm going to stop rambling about stuff and try to figure out if I want to do a fantasy rant or anything like that tonight. Who knows where the wind will blow...

Now On Lulu: Into The Shadows

August 25th 2008 22:29
I went to an anime convention this weekend. Therefore I had no time to write (or eat or sleep) in between my events and my hanging out and everything else. I will say that I had a wonderful time. But I'll also admit that that was not the point of this post.

The point was to say that I've put up my poetry book, Into The Shadows, up for sale as an eBook on Lulu. I didn't do too much with it, it's a short thing with a bunch of poems, notes about one of the sets, and a rather small intro

A Change Of Plans

August 22nd 2008 12:31
I've just received a rejection for Moonshadow's Guardian and that is now the one I'm looking to publish with Scribe (http://scribe.nediex.com/). I will also be putting together and publishing a poetry collection on Lulu, with a few extras thrown in.

The plan for my poetry collection includes a dedicated section which mentions a lot of the people who I've connected to over the internet, and I'm probably going to throw in a few pages of my short, poetic-prose project Founding of Moonshadow. There will also be a brief introduction to the work

Working

August 21st 2008 23:12
I've been working a lot lately and working very actively on my writing, specifically on the book Jihad (in the previous post). It's coming along nicely and it flows, but at times it's a bit slow. I've spent about 20-30 hours this week working on it, and why? Because I love my work and I have a deadline.

I get a newsletter from the writer Holly Lisle. She has some opinions on writing, planning, and editing that I do not share. (Her mind organizes writing into scenes. I can't do that.) She also is a bit of a workaholic, but I understand where she's coming from. Although her organization and her style of work is generally not mine, she does have some good ideas and is clearly devoted to her work

Jihad

August 15th 2008 04:23
This is just to see if anyone is interested in Jihad, with some of the basic story described...

Kaitlyn grew up in a small Christian town to conservative parents; soon, however, they moved to the city, where she found herself gaining a lot of freedom. Her new best friend was a Pagan girl named Naomi, and she was doing plenty of things her mother would've had a heart attack over

Crazy Months Ahead

August 13th 2008 16:07
I finished my AugNoWriMo, I'm actually surprised at its quality.

Tomorrow I'm going home. And I won't be posting much for a while because I have to finish a book, edit two, and publish them. I should be back completely in October-with a new laptop to write about

A Year Old

August 11th 2008 10:39
Well the blog is now officially just over a year old. So, I'm going to link to some of the best posts (although some of them are up on the spotlight thing) and I'm going to do the gushy thank yous, especially for the people I forgot.

Because, you know, I'm like that. Besides. A year. I'm almost fifteen. I'm repeating grade nine. It's funny because I really don't feel like I've gotten very far outside of my writing. But this is a writing blog, and that is the point

Introducing: My Fantasy Rants

August 11th 2008 02:34
This is my own set of rants about fantasy, covering cliches and things that are overdone in fantasy. How to do things well and how they have been done badly.

For those of you that haven't read Limyaael's rants, they're all very good and there's a link in a recent post. I don't have it written down off the computer so I can't put it here, as I'm not looking at it at the moment

Rants

August 10th 2008 04:01
Soon I will be beginning a series of my own fantasy rants, in the tradition of Limyaael. These will be about things I like/don't like/think of stuff done in fantasy. Specifically things that I would point out in a crit if I noticed it.

I'm going to say this now. These are personal opinion and if they offend you, too bad. But fantasy is wrought with cliches and badly written books, and I'm hoping to reduce the number-and if nobody takes my advice, oh well

A Lot Of Work

August 9th 2008 01:24
Worldbuilding, despite all the fun it can be, can be hard work. And a lot of work, depending on the level of worldbuilding you're going for. It all depends on how much worldbuilding you're doing and when your deadlines are.

Right now, I'm building a history, a culture, a language, about a dozen maps, mythology, another culture, and more mythology. I've been working on it a fair bit. And it can be frustrating at times, but mostly it's not too hard. The hardest part was getting down the Elvish history. It just wouldn't come to me until a Historian character came into the picture. Well, historian is wrong; scholar would be better

AugNoWriMo

August 4th 2008 06:28
August Novel Writing month has begun!

My count stands at 5, 584 and I'll be writing more throughout the night. Not sure if I can produce anything other than this update in terms of blogging tonight, for various reasons, but I had to do something to let you guys know I'm still alive.

Research, Research, Research

August 2nd 2008 18:41
Research is something all writers will do at some point in time, if they're any good. Why? Because it needs to be done to make your world all the more real. (And, obviously, if you write nonfiction... well duh.) Because researching human cultures and human histories and religions make you have a better point of view when it comes to your own world.

Even if you're making it up from scratch. The reason why? Because humans are still human, no matter where you put them. Because intelligent life as we call it probably has some of the same traits as humanity-emotionally, mentally, perhaps physically

Worldbuilding: Cultures

August 2nd 2008 05:36
Cultures can be incredibly fun to build. And, to tell the truth, I could (just from stuff I've been reading lately), write numerous entries about them. I probably will start up a series of writings about Fantasy Cultures and other fantasy things, eventually, but not right now. I'd feel too much like I'm ripping someone else off.

Who might that someone be, you ask? Probably one of the most brilliant writers I've ever read, and I've only read her rants. She's got a good brain and knows good books when she sees them. I really like her work. There will be a link posted at the end
